Question about Jaguar XJ8

Do I just loosen the brake resevior and push the piston back into the caliper or do I loosen the bleeder screw on the caliper first to prevent damage to the ABS valve.

I am changing my front brakes and would like to know if I have to bleed the brakes after the new brakes are on?


So to install new brakes you always need to compress your caliper back to its original position. There are two ways of doing this one requires you to bleed your system and the other does not.
1. you can loosen your bleeder screw on your caliper to release the pressure to compress your caliper piston if you choose this method you will definitely need to bleed the system because loosening the bleeder screws allows air to enter your brake lines.
2. The other method is remove your brake reservoir cap. If you choose this method you will not need to bleed your brakes (this is assuming you had no air in your brake system prior to starting your brake job) this method allows you to push your brake fluid back up through your reservoir. I would suggest though put a towel around the filler neck of your reservoir because the excess fluid will come out the top as you compress the piston in the calipers. Good luck I hope this helps

How do I compress the disc brake caliper so i can fit it back in place to mount?


There's a small bleeder valve on each wheel's backing plate. Gently loosen the valve assembly using one hand, while compressing the caliper with the other. Re tighten the valve once the caliper assembly is fully compressed. Do not release the caliper assembly until you have re-tightened the bleeder valve - to do so will **** air into the brake line and require you to bleed the system.

YOU NEED A PISTON COMPRESS TOOL TO PRESS PISTON BACK IN THE BORE WITH THE BLEEDER SCREW OPEN ON THE CALIPER*.CLOSE BLEEDER SCREW JUST BEFORE THE CALIPER PISTON IS PUSHED FULLY INTO CALIPER.THIS WILL ALLOW ROOM FOR NEW BRAKE PADS AND CALIPER FIT OVER THE BRAKE ROTOR.WHEN FINISH.PUTTING BRAKE PADS ON YOU HAVE TO BLEED BRAKE SYSTEM.DONT DRIVE VECHICLE IF YOU CANT GET A GOOD FIRM BRAKES.

Trying to replace the brake pads. what do i need to do to get the caliper to go back in so i can put it on over the brake pads again?


you can loosen the bleeder valve and then use a C clamp to press it back in and then retighten the valve, You will lose a little fluid but will not need to re-bleed the lines.

Rear pisttons on ford 500 will not push in to install rear brake pads


If you have disk brakes, and you cannot fit the new brake pads in the callipers? Loosen the brake fluid reservoir cap to allow pressure to escape. Use a large C clamp connecting it to the front and back of the piston. Turn the screw on the clamp to compress the brake piston then release the clamp. The piston will remain compressed allowing you the fit the housing over the new brake pads.

Loosen the bleeder valve open on the caliper. Take a C Clamp and use that to press thei piston back in. Very simple. Tighten the bleeder valve shut when doe with sombody holding the brake pedal down firmly as you tighten the valve. That prevents air getting into the line

It has new brakes but the abs light came on and now the brake pedal is hard and I barely have any brakes


If the person who did the brakes did not release the bleeder screws on the front brake calipers to prevent pushing brake fliud back into the anti lock hydralic unit when retracting the brake caliper pistons they may have damaged the anti lock unit. Try doing a complete beed out of the brake fluid front and back to regain function.

I got the old pads off but cannot get the caliper back on. The rod will not go back into the rubber boot.


You will need a larger sized C clamp to slowly push the caliper back into its boot. Make sure your brake fluid reservoir kid is OFF,..allowing for the fluid to go back into the reservoir. Once you have placed the C clamp around the caliper, take an old brake pad and place it across the round piston...place part of the clamp over this pad and tighten the clamp..Do not place the clamp directly on the piston, you may damage it or compress it in crooked. so place a used pad across it. Push the piston back in untill its almost flush with the boot, making sure no dirt is on the silver exposed piston..u dont want dirt to go back inside the boot. Once its in, refit the caliper to its mount with the new pads.

Most pistons can be pushed back in with a wooden hammer handle, or similar, after loosening bleeder.

How to i put the brake caliper piston inside


If the question is how to compress the brake caliper, this is done using a larger C-clamp. Make sure to watch both sides as compressing one side may cause the brake fluid to push the other side out further. This causes a big mess and is easier to avoid than to remedy.
