Yes, this a sure sign of the freon running out. The pump gave it a last push that's where the smoke came from. You can drive the car, but make sure the AC is switched off as it will damage the pump trying to blow empty AC.
Check to make sure the AC belt still turns the pump as it might have overheated and/or seized. Does the pump screech when the AC is turned on? If so the belt is loose and needs retensioned.
