Question about 2004 Volkswagen Golf

1 Answer

Have a 04 golf 2.0 with a CEL on; code: P2181. Engine doesn't run hot, plenty of fluids, suspect either a temp sensor or a thermostat. Is it safe to drive if it runs well otherwise?

Possible Solutions
* Check Engine Coolant Temperature Sender (G62)
* Check Coolant Thermostat
* Check Engine Cooling System
o Put the key on, fan speed on 1, and push the a/c switch. Are both fans kicking on? If not, you found the problem.
o Put the key on and fan speed on 1. Does heat come out readily from the vents?
+ No. Probably the water pump is gone.
+ Yes. Probably the thermostat is gone. good- luck!!

Why is My 04 PT Criuser running hot and there is coolant in the radiator ?

check your cooling fans make sure they are working, to do this start your engine and turn on the ac the cooling fans should be running, if it does the next thing to check is the temp sensors, to do this turn off the ac, while the engine is running keep an eye on your temp gauge if the dial is going up above normal or at the point where you say the engine is running hot check if the cooling fans are running,
1) if not running, cooling fan sensor is not working, replace
2)if running, thermostat is shut, the thermostat regulates the flow of coolant in the engine it is fully open at normal operating temp and close if coolant is cold, replace

I have a 2004 vw jetta and i am getting a p2181 code. the air out of my vents is very hot (165+-) and when the AC is on it only drops about 10deg. the fan is not coming on at all but the AC fan does.

You might want to do some internet research on the code. For Volkswagen cars, the code means there is a problem with the cooling system but that could be alot of things.
The common issues posted on discussion boards are the thermostat and temp sensor. I don't know if either one would affect the heater without making the engine run hot too.

My engine in my 04 Sebring is running hot, andthe a/c is blowing hot air. Doesn't happen everyday. What's wrong?

Your A/C has it's own little radiator that sits right in front of your engine's water-filled radiator. Heat from your engine radiator is prolly transferring itself into the other smaller radiator and over-whelming it. When any engine is running hot, it usually turns out to be a bad themostat, bad temp-sensors (that run your electric cooling fans on the radiator (or one (or both) radiator fans have died). I would start with the thermostat since it's the cheapest....

The check engine light stays on and the dealer said I need a themmostate, however it doesn`t leak or run hot. Can this be right?

If the check engine light is On the owner would have performed a scan on his car which would have given him some error code and the code will indicate that thermostat is faulty. Is the code p2181? if it is i think the thermostat is faulty and needs to be replaced.

5 error cods on my 2002 Jetta GLS 1.8 Turbo Engine

P0420= Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold Bank 1
P0300=Random/Multiple Cylinder Misfire Detected
P0301=Cylinder 1 Misfire Detected
P0172=System Too Rich Bank 1
P2181=Cooling System Performance
you need to write these down,have someone clear the codes in the car,then go for short ride and recheck which if any code reappears.it's like domino's affect,one sensor can start a chain affect with the others.

CEL is ON. OBD code P2181. I already replaced the ECT 3 mo ago due to OBD code P0118.

P2181 is a overheating engine.
Can be:
Bad fan themoswitch, temp sensor themostat water pump impeller fan motor or fuse on battery
check to see if fans work by turning on Air Conditioner (fans should run with A/C on). Turn A/C off, warm engine, check to see if fans come on, if they do NOT it may be thermo switch on radiator on lower left side, has 3 wire plug, takes 1-1/8" wrench/socket to remove.  This thermo switch controls fans when temp reaches 195F, if fans do not come on at engine temp 190-195F try  replace switch VW part number: 1J0-959--481-A  You can verify if the switch is bad by shorting wire 1 and 2 (fans should come on when jumpered).
