Check or replace the battery to body ground wire. 3 main grounds are battery to engine, battery to body and engine to body.

Checking for a parasitic draw. have meter hooked up properly but meter reads o.l open line. friend suggested faulty ground. where are the grounds beside the battery cable

Battery to body, battery to engine and engine to body are the main three. Grounds aren't the problem. Some thing is on all the time. Most drains are the starter, alternator, and radio. Others are the glove box light and sun visor switch.. They leave the lights on. Ignition switch can do it also, but it is because the key comes out in off and accessory.

Alternator drops voltage on accel or when A/C is turned on. Leaning towards PCM if it controls output voltage from the alternator.

I don't think a 97 is PCM controlled. What I would do is pull the alternator plug. Yours should be two wire(hot and ground). the third single wire plug is for the battery light or meter. Anyway. on the two wire plug check them for power, turn the ignition on and use a volt meter to find the power wire. The other is ground. The voltage should be close the battery voltage. Then I would check the battery grounds. From the battery negative side, there should be one to the engine and one to the body, then one from the engine to the body. These are the main grounds. If they are good, I would cut the ground wire at the alternator (about 4 inches) and run a new ground any where on the engine. This should take care of your voltage lose.

Why does my alternators keep dying

One thing that occasionally happens is that the system ground gets messed up. There is usually a braided metal bonding strap from the engine to the firewall. This ensures that the engine block (where the alternator is grounded) is at the same ground potential as the vehicle body (which is where most all other electrical devices are grounded to). If that strap is loose or missing, then the ground path is interrupted and must find another route. The negative battery cable can come loose from the engine block, or can get rusty and corroded and cause high resistance. These problems induce resistance which reduces available voltage, increases current demand, and can overtax the alternator's voltage regulator over time, causing failure. Use a digital multimeter and, on the 1x ohms scale, check resistance between:

  1. Engine block and body metal (use clean, bare metal locations)
  2. Alternator case and engine block
  3. Alternator case and negative battery terminal
  4. Negative battery terminal and engine block
  5. Negative battery terminal and body metal.
All of these locations are technically "ground".. There should be very little resistance measured on any of these checks. Any readings that, on the 1x ohms scale, read as open circuits need to be checked and repaired.

Lack of power, hesitation, climate control blowing hot air

Always check body grounds. You may have good power to the engine with a good ground still, but your body grounds control power to all else.

Put new starter on 1997 Ford F150 Truck and the starter clicks but does not start and ground wire is hot

Sounds like an intermittent Earth connection. Check all the battery and earth leads where they connect to the Battery, Engine, Starter Motor and Body. If possible disconnect, clean and reconnect.

Battery not holding charge.

The new battery might be faulty. I have had a few new batteries that seemed good. After they were installed, the car would start right up. If the car sat overnight, the battery would drain down to about 10.5V and wouldn't start.
Try disconnecting the (-) terminal on the battery and let the car sit overnight. Then reconnect the
(-) and try to start the car (or if you have a voltmeter check the voltage across the battery terminals) . If the car is hard to start or doesn't start the battery is defective.

here is the wiring diagram for the charging system. let me know if you need any of the other wiring diagrams.

No power after changing gas fuel pump for 91 chev

You have a short to ground. What that means is,you have a power wire...............that is grounding on the vehicle somewhere,or possibly back in the fuel pump. The fuel pump theoretically could be shorted internally causing the problem. It also could be a wire or wires back where you were working possibly got pinched.Disconnect negative battery terminal until problem is solved.
