Question about 2004 Isuzu Rodeo

2004 3litre turbo diesel stays in H 4wd all the time .Press 2wd button in, transfer case moves into 2wd release 2wd button drops straight back into 4wd. Can only keep 2wd in place by holding 2wd button in all the time, Is there a simple cure

The sensor recogonising high whell drive must be faulty... There are chances of faulty switch also which needs to be replaced

I have a 97 blazer 4wd i repalced vaccum switch all vaccum lines and made sure actuator cable was good lights come on like im in 4wd but diff doesnt lock in and actuator not getting vaccum


The vacuum actuator should move by hand without vacuum applied. You should also be able to see it move if you have someone switch the transfer case into 4hi/lo from 2wd and then back again. There is a vacuum switch on top of the transfer case that locks vacuum once the encoder motor engages the transfer case to lock the front axle into position, and then releases the vacuum once the encoder switches back into 2wd mode allowing the front axle to decouple. If you aren't getting vacuum, first check your vacuum lines for leaks, then check for vacuum coming from the transfer case when it's in 2wd mode.

I have had my Transfer Case Encoder Motor in my 2005 1500 Z71 replaced 2 times inthe last month, the last one replaced was less than 5 days ago. The last 2 mornings when I have started the truck the 4wd...


I would say the transfer case is hanging up and destroying the motor., and no there are no recalls, maybe technical service letters but these are not recalls.

Got. A 2003 f150 4x4 got problems with 4 wheel drive locking in and stay in drive shaft turning front wheels not


Operationally vacuum shifts the front axle between 2WD and 4WD mode. The GEM ( Generic Electronics Module ) applies ground to the solenoid needed for the mode selected on the switch ( for ESOF ) or when the transfer case shift lever is moved ( MSOF ).The contact plates in the transfer case signal the GEM that the transfer case is engaged, and the Vacuum solenoids need to be activated ( either 2WD to 4WD or 4WD to 2WD ).

Lift and support the front of the truck so the front wheels are off the ground ( take safety precautions, chock wheels, jack stands, etc )
Key on, engage 4x4 and try to turn the front drive shaft.
- If it turns it is a problem with the transfer case.
- If it doesn't it is a front axle engagement problem ( this is what you seem to have, the transfer case is engaged and will drive the front shaft mine was a key on engine off test ).

- If the front drive shaft does not turn :
•With the truck running ( with front wheel back on the ground ), switch from 2WD to 4WD and back again, the vacuum shift motor should move the lever on the front axle.

1.Check for vacuum on the lines while shifting between modes. Pink vacuum line is 2WD mode, Light Blue vacuum line is 4WD.
2.Check the fuses for the 4WD system and the solenoids.
3.Check the vacuum lines from the vacuum shift motor to the solenoids on the firewall.

4.Check the vacuum lines from the solenoids to the vacuum reservoir box behind the battery.
5.Check the vacuum reservoir box for cracks.
6.Typical solution is the vacuum lines ( to the solenoids or to the vacuum shift motor ) are cracked or the vacuum shift motor has a cracked diaphragm and has water in it.
7.Could be the shift plate contacts in the transfer case are corroded / not making good contact, and not activating the solenoids.

Usually the case is cracked vacuum lines from the solenoids, the next common is a cracked vacuum reservoir box, and 1 time I have seen the mount for the vacuum disconnect motor broken ( motor floating free so it could not push against the axle )

My 98 f150 was in 4WD Hi this morning when I started it. Selector switch is in 2WD position. 4WD Hi light is on, hubs (or front differential) is engaged and transfer case engage. (Feel front wheel hop...


If the switch was in the 2WD position and the transfer case was locked in a 4WD range, my 2 SWAGs would be bad switch or the connector to the shift motor is damaged / corroded or the fuse to the transfer case shift relay module is blown ( fuse # 17 ) / problem with the transfer case shift relay module.

This is without knowing if the truck was used in 4WD the night prior, and shifted out just before turning off. If this is the case, the shift motor might be stuck, and a few hits with a dead blow hammer to the transfer case might jar it free again ( do not use a metal hammer, it could damage the transfer case ).

The vacuum shift solenoids on the firewall are controlled by the GEM ( Generic Electronic Module ) which is grounding either the 2WD or 4WD solenoid, depending on the shift plate contacts in the transfer case. ( when in 4 or 4H, the contact switch plate signals the GEM, which in turn grounds the correct solenoid ).

Pulling the switch will not cause the transfer case to go back to a default position, the switch has a resistance level for each mode, and needs that value to operate the shift motor.

The resistance values for the switch between the 2 dark blue wires:
2WD - 4100 to 3700 ohms
4H - 1050 to 1150 ohms
4L - 380 to 340 ohms
- find the wire locations on the switch, mark them and remove the connector to test the resistance.

Just my opinion on the order :

1. Check the fuses for the shift motor
2. Try the old school shift method, back up ~ 50' put into park or neutral, and shift from 4WD to 2WD.
2.1. This is to see if the transfer case shift motor is bound up, and reversing might release it
3. Try hammering the transfer case with a dead blow hammer while someone shifts from 2WD to 4WD. You only need the key in the run position, if it happens quick enough after running the engine, the vacuum reservoir will still have enough vac to operate the solenoids. Don't chance running yourself over.
3.1. If this frees up the shift motor and the vacuum has bled off, you can try starting the truck and shifting into 4H then back to 2WD to get the front axle to disconnect or manually vacuum operate the front disconnect motor by applying vacuum to the pink vacuum line on the shift motor on the front axle.

So I would think you have locking hubs on it? So you lock the hubs in and then put it in 4wd and driving sometimes it stays in 4wd when you want to shift it back into 2wd? Sounds like the shifter inside the transfer case is hanging up. In some cases if you drive faster than 50mph and try to shift it back to 2wd it won't do it, unlock the axle and back the truck up to reline the spline gear in the transfer case. I would request the transfer case be replace since its under warranty. And as far as Ford telling you they can't do nothing look in your owners manual and call the complaint office and tell them what dealer you went to. Also I would go back and talk to the manager sounds like someone doesn't want to do his job.

Truck won't go back in to 2wd from 4wd


I had a similar issue in that we couldn't turn the 4wd on no matter how hard we tried. We replaced the switches in the dash and the vacuum hoses on the switch on the transfer case. the vacuum lines were dry rotted and leaking. we had our mechanic do it and all told was less than 500 bucks labor and tax included.

4x4 transimission clunks when engaged?


When engaging the 4WD system, you are pulling the lever on the Transfer Case right? Not the transmission, it's a different gearbox.
There were several versions of transfer cases that used both full and part-time 4 wheel drive.
From your description this sounds like a part-time transfer case.
Going with that, it is somewhat normal to hear and feel a mild clunk when engaging 4WD high range, especially if you are at a complete stand-still or under full throttle.
Try engaging 4WD High while slowly rolling at idle - no throttle. It should pull in fairly smoothly.
Once 4WD is engaged it will literally LOCK the front and rear axles together. So do not do it on hard dry pavement.
These older style 4WD systems need a little "give" especially when turning. The engineers assume you are not engaging 4WD unless you are in a somewhat slippery scenario.
Many CV joints, axles, U-Joints, differentials, and transfer cases are damaged and broken by folks who don't understand this.
Reading the owners manual should provide a clearer description of what you've got.
Bear in mind that when you come out of 4WD it may not completely release, again due to hard pavement binding up the axles. You can try this: backing up 10-25 feet in a straight line, or getting one set of wheels on the shoulder or in some gravel. That should allow it to release the transfer case and go back to everyday 2WD high.

Can't transfer to 4L or neutral mode


Transfer cases can be quirky. I've got a 91 Wrangler, an 86 Cherokee and a 75 Blazer. When I go from 2WD to 4WD, they each have their own personality.

There are a number of things I've learned to persuade a stubborn xfer case to shift.

Try mixing these :
  • Engine running, vehicle not moving
  • Engine off, Shift Xfer case, Restart
  • Tranny in neutral
  • Shift Xfer case 'N', Tranny in gear, Tranny in neutral, Xfer case to 4HI or 4LOW (as long as you feel it register), Tranny in gear, try to move
  • Shift Tranny to Reverse, roll a few yards
  • Lock/Unlock the Hubs
To get back to 2WD:
  • Drive for a few feet in a straight line
  • Unlock the hubs
  • Tranny Neutral
  • Shift xfer case
