Is there a band tightening or other adjustment that can only be done while the pan is off to change the filter on my girlfriend's 4-speed automatic transaxle(2003 Impala v-6 3400)?

Hopefully your plan will work but it sounds like you might have already burnt some clutches out in the transmission. Automatic transmissions tend to build a varnish like substance that not only clogs every thing up and will stop it from functioning. I changed the fluid and filter in an old Mercury once and the new fluid cut out all the old varnish and stopped up the filter and burnt out the clutches within a mile from home. Keep a check on the amount of fluid that is getting through and it isn't stopped up or it will burn it up permanently. If it quits pulling stop and change that filter. Maybe by having to put so much fluid through it because of the leak has already cleaned all the varnish out of it.

98 crown vic transmission slipping

Change the filter and fluid. This car if the transmission is original should have a torque converter drain. Drain the torque converter also,it gets almost all the fluid out of the transmission. Doing this the car will require almost 12 quarts of fluid. Worth a shot. I change mine at 25000 mile intervals.

regular maintenance is to check fluid levels,,if transmission seems to be "slipping" reaching high revolutions(REVS) with seemingly less power, then you may have to have it service by changing screens of trans. filter.

How to fill transmission oil

Assuming this car is an automatic, You add the fluid where you check the trasmision fluid. You have to get a Funnel that is designed for the transmission tube. Go to Auto zone, Wal-Mart. It will say Transmission funnel on it. about 2 bucks or less. To check it properally, Start the car, leave it in park, Make sure it is warmed up. Many people make the mistake of not checking the fliud when it's running and at operating temperatures. It's always wise to have the fluid drained and the Transmission filter replaced every 30,000 miles. Usually cost about 20 bucks for your do it yourselfers. Many people spend $1000 bucks or more to have a new transmission put it, because they don't know to change the fluid and filter, just like the oil and filter. I work in a mechanics shop, and i see so much hundreds of dollars being pumped into a car because of lack of simple inexpensive maitenience on a vehicle. Hope that helps out some. RWD cars the Dipstick is usually on the back firewall of a Vehicle. FWD the dipstick is usually located on the drivers side next to the engine. I hope that helps out some.

Trans just started slipping 2002 Dodge Stratus with 54000 miles no signs of problems before do you check trans level in park or drive?

You allways check the transmission fluid level in car after the car has a few minutes to worm up. If you have not had the transmission fluid and filter change in a long time then you need to do it. The fluid and filter should be changed every 30,000 miles to keep you from having problems. Hope this will help you.

Transmission will not engage and slips when it does engage

auto trans operates on fluid pressure. if the trans has never been serviced, more than likely the filter is plugged, and or the fluid is bad. no doubht its burned and will smell and look like it. get it towed to a shop and have the fliud and filter changed first, then check the band adjustment.recommend a trans shop do it and not jiffylube.

It is most likely a plugged filter. I would try performing a transmission service on it and change the filter. What is happening is that the pump will only **** for a bit until a greater demand is on it. Once the pump is stopped ( shutting engine off) the fluid migrates back into the filter and fills it up. Engine is started and trans will work ok until all fluid is exhausted out of filter and it "gives out". Try this out first, it is a cheap start, and most likely is the problem.
