Really need to know year to answer this, but here are two diagrams of generation 2 350 V8 and generation 1 350 V8, choose the diagram that looks like your distributor cap. The 2nd diagram is what u want I am sure
1st diagram is late model 350 V8
looking for number 1 spot - 3586e17.gif

2nd diagram is old style 1st generation 350 V8 with large HEI cap. Number one spark plug wire is the white dot on the cap without a black dot inside. I think this is the one u have since this is a V20

I have a 78 Firebird with a 350 in it. i know it has to do witht he timing but i have already done the #1 plug to the compression and lining up the timing mark on the harmonic balancer. i have also got the...

IF YOU HAVE NEW TIMING CHAIN INSTALLED TIMING MARKS 12 OCLOCK POSITION ON CRANKSHAFT SPROCKET AND CAMSHAFT SPROCKET. AND THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP ROTOR POINTING TOWARD 1 FIRING POSITION.STANDING FRONT OR CAR LOOKING AT THE DISTRIBUTOR CAP 1 FIRING POSITION ON CAP SHOULD BETWEEN THE 5 OCLOCK AND 6 OCLOCK POSITION.DO YOU HAVE 350 OLDS ENGINE OR 350 CHEVY ENGINE THERE WILL BE A DIFFERENCE BECAUSE OLDSMOBILE 350 ENGINE 1 FIRING POSITION ON DISTRIBUTOR CAP WOULD BE AT 12 OCLOCK POSITION.ONCE YOU GET ENGINE PISTON AND VALVE TIMING RIGHT YOU HAVE TO USE TIMING LIGHT AND TACHOMETER TO ADJUST THE IGNITION TIMING.

Change the distributor cap and rotor now car wont start

you may have the firing order wrong
look on the intake manifold you should see the firing order
it should be 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2
on each side of the intake there are number 1-3-5-7 on one side and 2-4-6-8 on the other side

Change plugs and wire and engine will not acclerate. This is a built 350 short block chevy with pro charger.

350 Chevy engine in what? 1990 Corvette? Who built it, did you?

Sounds as though you have plug wires wrong.
Firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2

Distributor Ignition System:
Distributor rotates Clockwise. (Rotor)
Find Number 1 tower on distributor cap, go Clockwise with Firing Order.

Distributorless Ignition System:
VIEWING the engine from the Front of the car.

Spark plug wire connections along the back, starting from Left side going to Right side;
2-3-7-4

Spark plug wire connection towards the Front of the engine;
6-1-5-8

(To guess I would say you have 5 and 7 wires switched)

Left side cylinder order is 1-3-5-7, going from front to back.
Drivers side is Left side.
Right side cylinder order is 2-4-6-8, going from front to back.

1990 chevy 350 distributor wiring diagram and firing order

The firing order is 1-8-4-3-6-5-7-2.
The distributor rotates in a clockwise direction. The engine must be on the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder. Line up the timing marks. Remove the cap and the rotor should be pointing to approximately the 5 o'clock position.

Good Luck

Distributor cap #1spot

Hello the location of number one cylinder as long as the distributor has never been tampered with is going to be, As if you are standing at the front of the engine, it will be located at about 5:30. If it has ever been moved then you will need to pull #1 spark plug (driver side front). and put a screw driver in the plug hole at the same time have someone manually turn engine over( not with Key)
but by the crank shaft when you feel the(you must also beable to feel airbuilding up)on the compression stroke, piston all the way up remove distributor cap and look at the button direction. There you will know that is #1.
