If your Jeep ran hot enough to shut itself down then you likely have at least a blown head gasket for starters. The casue of the overheating also needs to be addressed. Timing gears won't make an engine overheat nor will they cause an engine to lose compression.

If there is not enough compression to let it start, then you need to take it to a shop and have it checked out but you are probably looking at a head gasket and probably a warped or cracked head. Hope this helps.

Blown head gasket?runs real bad, water out the exaust.

Well, it your running water out the exhaust, you can bet your heads are cracked. Its not just the head gasket. Check the salvage yards for a replacement head. It will save you alot.

I'm trying to get a ballpark figure for repairing my 2000 jeep grand cherokee. It appears that I may have blown the heads in it. I was having a problem with it blowing the coolant back out of it. I started...

wow so many variables. warped heads/ damage to the cam/rods/valve/ valve lifters.
possibly a whole lot more problems.
i blew a head gasket on a car. replaced it for about 40 bucks and several hours labourgh.
the thing never did work great after that.

Grand jeep cherokee 1997 white smoke /tail pipe

Two choice:
1. Inspect the Head Gasket; Cause: head gasket leaking coolant into cylinders
2. inspect the Engine; Cause: Cracked block leaking coolant into cylinders.

Coolant is not a flammable liquid, therefore a lot of coolant in cylinder creates starting problem. You should check your engine and the coolant system for this issue.

The first thing you can do is check the oil dipstick - you're looking for a milky brown color as opposed to a dark brown (normal) color for oil - unless you've recently had an oil change - then it will be like honey. If you don't see any discoloration - I would then look around the the bottom of the area where the valve covers are located - the valve covers sit atop the heads and if you have a "blown" head gasket - you may see evidence of water/coolant seepage. You can also take the vehicle to a mechanic, who can do a simple test using air pressure to isolate a potential gasket issue.

Good luck (remember rated this post).

My jeep got hot, towed it home , next day went to start it,it rattled and died, is it a blown head gasket?

Quite possible but you will need to do a compression test and cooling system pressure test to verify before taking it apart. Don't forget to look for the cause of the overheat as well...replacing head gaskets (if failed) should be viewed as fixing the result of the problem, not the cause...You don't want to do the job twice.
