Check for spark, at the spark plug wires. pull one off , get a helper, put a screwdriver in the sparkplug boot and hold it about 1/4 inch away from something metal on the car engine, have a friend start the car while you look for a small lighting bolt to jump from the screwdriver to the cars metal part. if you dont see spark you got bad parts somewhere. HOLD THE RUBBER ON THE SCRWDRIVER so u dont get a zap

Cranks but wont start with no spark

Check your fuel pump. It may have died. One way to check is to see if you smell gas at the tail pipe after trying to start it. If you don't, that is a good indicator that the fuel pump ma have died or your fuel filter is clogged.

I have a 89 cavalier z24 2.8 liter. It wont longer that 2 or 3 seconds. i have good spark, fuel at the rail i don't have a gauge... not sure if it is a fuel problem or something with the computer. thanks...

you will have to get the fuel pressure tested as there is no way to know for sure what the pressure is.these systems run at about 35lbs pressure.it sounds like a fuel pump problem or volume problem,it could be a plugged filter, either way the pump would need replacing.and change the filter at the same time.as i say without knowing what the pressure really is your taking a chance that it is the pump.however these are a common problem with these cars.

Thought it was fuel pump?replaced it .still cuts out while accilerating.sometimes won't start at all

if it cuts out quickly more likely spark problem if you can test it when it wont start is the easiest way to know .suspect crank sensor or mogul

1989 Z24, Pulled in my driveway. Stopped then it sounded like it was out of gas. turned it off. The next day tried starting and it would not turn over. As if it was not firing

heres a list of things to check: fuel filter(s), in tank fuel pump,(listen for a buzzing sound in the rear gas tank area when key is in the on position but not engaged in start), fuses(inside and out), fuel level, check for spark, (spark should be blue, not yellow)
