You don't adjust it. theres a pulley that keeps the tension on the belt. read the handbook and it will show you where to look for the arrow that tells you between this mark and that mark is the right tension. if its not in that area, then you need a new belt. the tensioner pulley keeps it tight

Ther is no adjustment it is a spring loaded tensioner ,you have to pull back on the tensioner to install the belt then when you release it the tensioner keeps pressure on the belt

I'm changing out a bad alternator on a 2004 mustang ,where is the belt tensioner locateed?

usually right under the alternator sometimes the alternator is the belt tensioner, if so then just loosen the alternator bolts and in should move inwards a little allowing you to get the belt off, if thats the case then make sure you have a pry bar of some sort to adjust the new alternator so the belt will be tight

I bought a 67 Mustang 200ci today and popped the belt on the way home. I replaced the belt but found no legit way to properly tension it, any suggestions? It squeaks like crazy

Belt tension is adjusted by moving the alternator away from the water pump. Loosen both alternator bolts (don't remove them) and place a pry bar or wooden handle between the alternator body and the engine block. GENTLY apply pressure to move the alternator away from the engine - when the belt has less than 1 inch vertical play, tighten the alternator bolts while maintaining tension on the alternator. If proper tensioning doesn't solve the squeal, then I would suspect the new belt is contaminated with oil or grease.

How to remove fan belt on my 1996 ford mustang?

Take tension off the tensioner and take belt off. You put wrench on the bolt that holds the pully on and pull - tension will come off the tensioner and you remove the belt.

Replace fan belt

Here is a diagram http://www.2carpros.com/car_repair_information/tec_info/2002/ford/mustang/2002_ford_mustang_drive_belt_routing_diagram.htm
its pretty simple use a wrench/hex which ever applies to the nut that on the tensioner some vehicle have a regular bolt type and some have a hex. Just follow illustration and push on tensioner using proper tool and release tension and belt and the belt will come and replace using the routing diagram I provided. Good Luck and Thanks for using FIX YA contact if you need more help.
