shoe breaks are tricky but can be a little easier with practice and the right tools;
What you;ll nned:
Spring pliers
Shoe hold down tool
Diagonal side cutters.
Needle nose pliers
Flathead screw driver.

this project is easy so long as you can remember how the parts go back together.

!. remove brake drum.
2. see how the brakes fit together. REMEMBER HOW THE BRAKE BAR GOES BACK IN. IT ONLY WORKS CORRECTLY ONE WAY!

the brake bar is the metal piece that goes between the brake shoes.
3. remove the brake shoe springs with the spring pliers. *THE BRAKES HOW HIGH POWERED SPRINGS AND SHOULD BE HANDLED CAREFULLY*
4. remove the brake shoes with the spring tool.
5. clean parts thoroughly with brake part cleaner. (i like spraying it into a glass jar and shaking it a little) you can use a wire wheel to brush to clean the harder material.
then take some brake cleaner and spray down the backing plate and remove any and all grease and old brake material.
6. using brake grease, dab a small amount on the adjuster and the small oval shaped pads on the backing plate, *use a SMALL AMOUNT* less then a finger nail in size.
7. reassembly, now compare the shoes and take note that there are 2 long and 2 short shoes.
thte larger shoes go in the front and the smaller go to the rear of the vehicle. set the pairs aside so you do not confuse them. next a fix the shoes to the backing plate and then set the adjuster to the lowest setting, (shortest). and set the brake bar in place then set the springs (the longer springs)
8. adjusting the shoes. slip the drum on the hub and spin the brake, it should feel like it has a bit of drag. keep slipping the drum on and off making adjustments to the adjuster till the drum either is adjusted correctly or you cannot remove it, if you need to adjust the brake further there is an access in the backing plate for further adjustment.

Removal & Installation
  1. For the 1500HD, relieve the tension from the park brake cable by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then removing the cable from the equalizer bar.
  2. For the 25/35 series Disable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  3. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  4. Remove the tire and the wheel.
  5. Perform the following procedure to remove the cable (2) from the backing plate (4):
    • Compress the spring (3) by pushing toward the lever (1).
    • Depress the locking tabs.
    • Pull the cable housing out of the backing plate (4).
    • Remove the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.

  6. Remove the park brake cable (2) from the lever (1).
  7. Remove the rotor.
  8. Remove the rear axle shaft.
  9. Remove the park brake shoe return spring (6).

  10. Remove the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  11. Separate the tips of the shoes from the park brake actuator and remove the park brake shoes and adjuster assembly from the vehicle.

To install:

  1. Clean the debris and the dust from the park brake components using a clean shop cloth.
  2. Install the adjuster assembly to the park brake shoes.
  3. Separate the tips of the shoes and install the park brake shoes to the park brake actuator.
  4. Install the park brake shoe anchor springs and pins.
  5. Install the park brake shoe return spring (6).
  6. Adjust the park brake shoe.
  7. Install the rear axle shaft.
  8. Install the rotor.
  9. Install the park brake cable (2) to the lever (1).
  10. Perform the following procedure to install the cable (2) to the backing plate (4):
    • Compress the spring (3) by pushing towards the lever (1).
    • Route the cable (2) through the slot in the backing plate.
    • Push the cable housing into the backing plate (4) until the locking tabs snap into place.
  11. Install the tire and wheel.
  12. Remove the safety stands.
  13. Lower the vehicle.
  14. Enable the park brake cable automatic adjuster.
  15. For the 1500HD, install the park brake cable to the equalizer by pulling down on the park brake cable in front of the equalizer then installing the cable to the equalizer bar.
  16. Adjust the park brake cable.

Replacing rear drum brakes. Need good diagram to indicate how to put it back together.

  1. Raise and support the vehicle and remove the wheel and brake drum from the wheel to be worked on. NOTE: If you have never replaced the brakes on a van before and you are not too familiar with the procedures involved, only dissemble and assemble one side at a time, leaving the other side intact as a reference during reassembly.
  2. Install a clamp over the ends of the wheel cylinder to prevent the pistons of the wheel cylinder from coming out, causing loss of fluid and much grief.
  3. Contract the brake shoes by pulling the self-adjusting lever away from the starwheel adjustment screw and turn the starwheel up and back until the pivot nut is drawn onto the starwheel as far as it will come.
  4. Pull the adjusting lever, cable and automatic adjuster spring down and toward the rear to unhook the pivot hook from the large hole in the secondary shoe web. Do not attempt to pry the pivot hook from the hole.
  5. Remove the automatic adjuster spring and the adjusting lever.
  6. Remove the secondary shoe-to-anchor spring with a brake tool. (Brake tools are very common implements and are available at auto parts stores). 2003 Envoy SLT V8--How can I adjust the parking brake? recently replaced per dealer cable and was very tight, then back at dealer for rotors ,E-brake then very loose. Back to dealer for adjustment=a little...


The parking brake on your envoy is like a small set of drum brakes mounted inside the "hat" of your rear rotors. To adjust it, remove the rear wheels and remove the rubber cap on the rotor. If you don't have a rubber cap look at the brake backing plate and look for an access plug. Rotate the rotor and look inside towards the top or bottom for a star wheel. Rotate the star wheel like you would if you were adjusting drum brakes. You want a very small amount of drag on the rotor while rotating it. If you get too much drag, rotate the star wheel the opposite direction.

I cant figure out how to assemble the back brake shoes and springs back together


Maybe to late for this but if you do one side at a time just look at the other side for how they go together. Also the short shoe goes toward the front long toward the back.
1. Clean and inspect individual brake components.
2. Lubricate anchor pin an brake show contact pads on support plate with high temperature grease or
Lubriplate. See Fig. 41 .
3. Lubricate adjuster screw socket, nut, button, and screw thread surfaces with grease or Lubriplate.
4. Install the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
5. Install parking brake lever to the secondary shoe and install retaining clip.
6. Install primary shoe on support plate. Secure shoe with new spring retainers and pin.
7. Install spring on parking brake strut and engage strut in primary.
8. Install secondary shoe on support plate. See Fig. 42 . Insert strut in shoe and guide shoe onto anchor pin.
Temporarily secure shoe with restraining pin.
9. Install anchor plate and adjuster cable eyelet on support plate anchor pin.
10. Install cable guide in secondary shoe and position cable in guide.
CAUTION: Be sure the adjuster screws are installed on the correct brake unit. The adjuster screws are marked
"L" (left) or "R" (right) for identification
11. Assemble adjuster screw. See Fig. 43 . Then install adjuster screw between the brake shoes.
12. Install adjuster lever and spring, and connect adjuster cable to lever.
13. Install secondary shoe retainers and spring.
14. Install shoe spring. Connect spring to secondary shoe first, then to primary shoe.
15. Verify adjuster operation. Pull adjuster cable upward, cable should lift and rotate star wheel. Be sure
adjuster lever properly engages star wheel teeth.
16. Adjust brake shoes. See REAR BRAKE SHOES under ADJUSTMENTS.
17. Install wheel and tire assembly. See TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS

Light Duty Systems

If you have never replaced the brakes on a van before and you are not too familiar with the procedures involved, only dissemble and assemble one side at a time, leaving the other side intact as a reference during reassembly.
  1. Install a clamp over the ends of the wheel cylinder to prevent the pistons of the wheel cylinder from coming out, causing loss of fluid and much grief.
  2. Contract the brake shoes by pulling the self-adjusting lever away from the starwheel adjustment screw and turn the starwheel up and back until the pivot nut is drawn onto the starwheel as far as it will come.
  3. Pull the adjusting lever, cable and automatic adjuster spring down and toward the rear to unhook the pivot hook from the large hole in the secondary shoe web. Do not attempt to pry the pivot hook from the hole.
  4. Remove the automatic adjuster spring and the adjusting lever.
  5. Remove the secondary shoe-to-anchor spring with a brake tool. (Brake tools are very common implements and are available at auto parts stores). Remove the primary shoe-to-anchor spring and unhook the cable anchor. Remove the anchor pin plate.
  1. Remove the cable guide from the secondary shoe.
  2. Remove the shoe hold-down springs, shoes, adjusting screw, pivot nut, and socket. Note the color of each hold-down spring for assembly. To remove the hold-down springs, reach behind the brake backing plate and place one finger on the end of one of the brake hold-down spring mounting pins. Using a pair of pliers, grasp the washer type retainer on top of the hold-down spring that corresponds to the pin which you are holding. Push down on the pliers and turn them 90° to align the slot in the washer with the head on the spring mounting pin. Remove the spring and washer retainer and repeat this operation on the hold down spring on the other shoe.
  3. Remove the parking brake link and spring. Disconnect the parking brake cable from the parking brake lever.
  4. After removing the rear brake secondary shoe, disassemble the parking brake lever from the shoe by removing the retaining clip and spring washer.
To install:
  1. Assemble the parking brake lever to the secondary shoe and secure it with the spring washer and retaining clip.
  2. Apply a light coating of Lubriplate®, or equivalent, at the points where the brake shoes contact the backing plate.
  3. Position the brake shoes on the backing plate, and install the hold-down spring pins, springs, and spring washer type retainers. On the rear brake, install the parking brake link, spring and washer. Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
  4. Install the anchor pin plate, and place the cable anchor over the anchor pin with the crimped side toward the backing plate.
  5. Install the primary shoe-to-anchor spring with the brake tool.
  1. Install the cable guide on the secondary shoe web with the flanged holes fitted into the hole in the secondary shoe web. Thread the cable around the cable guide groove.
  2. Install the secondary shoe-to-anchor (long) spring. Be sure that the cable end is not cocked or binding on the anchor pin when installed. All of the parts should be flat on the anchor pin. Remove the wheel cylinder piston clamp.
  3. Apply Lubriplate®, or equivalent, to the threads and the socket end of the adjusting starwheel screw. Turn the adjusting screw into the adjusting pivot nut to the limit of the threads and then back off 1 / 2 turn.
Interchanging the brake shoe adjusting screw assemblies from one side of the vehicle to the other would cause the brake shoes to retract rather than expand each time the automatic adjusting mechanism is operated. To prevent this, the socket end of the adjusting screw is stamped with an "R" or an "L" for "RIGHT" or "LEFT". The adjusting pivot nuts can be distinguished by the number of lines machined around the body of the nut; one line indicates left-hand nut and two lines indicate a right-hand nut.
  1. Place the adjusting socket on the screw and install this assembly between the shoe ends with the adjusting screw nearest to the secondary shoe.
  2. Place the cable hook into the hole in the adjusting lever from the backing plate side. The adjusting levers are stamped with an R (right) or a L (left) to indicate their installation on the right or left-hand brake assembly.
  3. Position the hooked end of the adjuster spring in the primary shoe web and connect the loop end of the spring to the adjuster lever hole.
  4. Pull the adjuster lever, cable and automatic adjuster spring down toward the rear to engage the pivot hook in the large hole in the secondary shoe web.
  5. After installation, check the action of the adjuster by pulling the section of the cable guide and the adjusting lever toward the secondary shoe web far enough to lift the lever past a tooth on the adjusting screw starwheel. The lever should snap into position behind the next tooth, and release of the cable should cause the adjuster spring to return the lever to its original position. This return action of the lever will turn the adjusting screw starwheel one tooth. The lever should contact the adjusting screw starwheel one tooth above the centerline of the adjusting screw.
If the automatic adjusting mechanism does not perform properly, check the following:
  1. Check the cable and fittings. The cable ends should fill or extend slightly beyond the crimped section of the fittings. If this is not the case, replace the cable.
  2. Check the cable guide for damage. The cable groove should be parallel to the shoe web, and the body of the guide should lie flat against the web. Replace the cable guide if this is not so.
  3. Check the pivot hook on the lever. The hook surfaces should be square with the body on the lever for proper pivoting. Repair or replace the hook as necessary.
  4. Make sure that the adjusting screw starwheel is properly seated in the notch in the shoe web.

Heavy Duty Systems
  1. Raise and support the vehicle.
  2. Remove the wheel and drum.
  1. Remove the parking brake lever assembly retaining nut from behind the backing plate and remove the parking brake lever assembly.
  2. Remove the adjusting cable assembly from the anchor pin, cable guide and adjusting lever.
  3. Remove the brake shoe retracting springs.
  4. Remove the brake shoe hold-down spring from each shoe.
  5. Remove the brake shoes and adjusting screw assembly.
  6. Disassemble the adjusting screw assembly.
  7. Clean the ledge pads on the backing plate. Apply a light coat of Lubriplate®, or equivalent, to the ledge pads (where the brake shoes rub the backing plate).

How do you remove rear brake drums on 1999 subaru impreza


u need to remove small rubber dust cover from back side of brake backing plate. then with a sturdy but small screwdriver,thru this hole, u need to locate auto adjuster plate inside drum, u push small driver against this so it is pushed off the adjuster cam, then with flat screwdriver, or adjusting tool, at same time as u are holding adjuster plate, back off adjuster wheel as far as it will go this is akward to do, but brakes need to be backed off to enable drums to be removed drums wear and develop a lip on edge u should then be able to slide drum off. if still hard tap with a hammer while pulling drum

There a rubber seal on back side of brake drum pull it out insert screwdriver there is a thing called star adjuster go from bottom and turn star adjuster up take about 20 turns your brakes have dug in linings and catching on rim but adjusting star adjuster will free them back towards center of wheel takes about 10 minutes good luck

what year is the truck and does is have drum brakes or disk brakes in the rear if it is drum you can go thru the backing plate with a brake adjustment tool and adjust them until you feel drag against the drum when you spin the tire by hand

The rear drum brakes:
  • Have internal shoes that expand against the brake drum (1126).
  • Are a single-anchor type.
  • Are actuated by one rear wheel cylinder (2262).
  • Have two pistons in the rear wheel cylinder (2261). One exerts force against the upper end of the primary shoe; the other exerts force against the upper end of the secondary shoe.
  • Adjust rear brake shoes and linings (2200) automatically.
  • Need manual brake adjustment if the adjusters are not operating properly or after the rear brake shoes and linings have been replaced.
When the brake pedal is applied, hydraulic fluid pressure forces the pistons in the rear wheel cylinder outward, moving the rear brake shoes and linings against the brake drum.
The rear drum brake system includes the parking brake mechanism. Refer to Section 206-05 .
