There could be many causes for this to happen. The thermostat could be sticking and only opening enough during higher engine rpm. The fan may not be coming on. The system could be clogged and not allowing much coolant to circulate until higher rpm. If this is something you want to tackle on your own I would suggest changing the Thermostat and thoroughly flushing the cooling system, then see how it acts and go from there.

These gauges are not accurate, however they do give a general idea of engine temp. A faulty Thermostat or broken electric fan can also cause a increase in temp. But under normal conditions the coolant temp will be around 180 - 220 degrees.( be careful performing this test) If you have a thermometer before the car is started you can remove the radiator cap and insert the temp probe, then start the car and let it run until the thermostat open. You will know when it open because you should see water moving in the radiator. If the temp is in this range you should also hear or see the electric fan come on. If the temp is greater then this you may have a partially obstructed radiator that needs flushed, a bad thermostat or water pump.

Why is there no pulse at injectors on a 05 mondeo tdci

No pulse? Is the engine running? How are you measureing pulse? If the engine is running there is a pulse, if it's not running, there won't be a pulse. If TDCI is correct this is a turbodiesel
Compression Ignition.

I have a 2001 1.8 lx mondeo. The temp gauge moves to the middle position when I drive around town, but when I go onto a duel carriageway or motorway the gauge drops back to the cold end, whats going on

First thing comes to mind is coolant level.
Temp gauge only measures temp of water...it can't read air temp.
If there's an air bubble that gets to the temp gage...you will indicate a lower temp.
I'd check for leaks...a water pump just starting to weep can cause up / down readings.

After that I'd look at the thermostat.
An experiment to try:
Prior to getting on the motorway, slide a piece of cardboard in front of the radiator and see if temp stays up.
I had a thermostat break in half once in winter...I had to do this trick to get enough heat to run my defrost....but running around in local traffic, it seemed to work fine.

If your problem was just the opposite...I'd be sending you to the lower radiator hose.

Hope this helps a little.

I have a 2002 Volkswagon Jetta and just started to overheat when stuck in traffic, the gauge goes up to 240 and the overheat light goes on but drops to normal when traffic is moving again - any idea what...

Check
1)thermostat and also that the electric fan is kicking in when it gets above normal temp
2)blocked radiator
3)worn water pump (more so from electrolysis, ie not using the right antifreeze)

hi there, you will need a diagnostic check carried out to locate the exact fault, most garages have the equipment to carry out these checks so you won't need to visit your ford agent, a common fault on the engines is the camshaft sensor these cost around £20 and are very easy to replace, however once you have it tested you will now your exact fault, hope this helps
