I went to autozone and its the device they used. That was the only code that came up. another site told me it could be the fuel pump pressure. Is there anyway to test the o2 sensor ?

It sounds like your engine is running very rich yet the computer thinks it's lean. P0171 is a lean code for bank 1 (the side of the engine with cylinder #1) Pretty much the only causes could be a large exhaust leak, bad o2 sensor or bad computer. Is the p0171 the only code?

High fuel pressure can certainly cause a rich condition, but if the oxygen sensor was functioning properly it would see it was running rich and set a rich running code. Since it set a lean running code the oxygen sensor is reading inaccurately, telling the computer the engine is running lean when it's actually running pig rich. The computer takes this data and increases the injector pulse width dumping more fuel in causing it to run rich. If you had access to a scanner you could see the data stream and make note of the oxygen sensor voltage. It should switch above and below .500 volts regularly, it may be stuck lean (below .500 volts). Based on what your saying and the limited diagnostic tools available to you i would start by replacing the oxygen sensor on bank 1.

Check Engine light

This is a lean Code. What is happening is too much air is entering the engine and the O2 sensor is making the engine run rich to rebalance the fuel ratio.

You need to find the leak. Use a spray bottle of water while the engine is running. When you spray over the leak, the rpm will change or the engine may even stall. This is where repair is needed.

Cavalier blowing out black smoke car idles fairly well considerin

Black smoke is usually unburned fuel. P0171 reads bank 1 system too lean. There isn't one answer. You need to dig further and inspect your cars fuel system, from the pump to the injectors. Because of the mileage you may want to start off with a compression test just to see where you stand with the motor. write back if you have any other questions.
