Question about 2000 Jeep Wrangler

2 Answers

2002 jeep wrangler, was having starter problems...now it will barely grind or not do anything at all. NO clicking sound, ,battery seems great. When you try to start it the dashboard does 2 different things, one time the key circle with a line thorugh it in the upper left corner lights up, the other times the odometer changes from numbers to what appears to be the word: "done"

Sounds like it might be your battery please make sure you have a fully charged battery in it . there are starter and alternator shops that would bench test it for you if you bring it to them i know pep boys and autozone bench test also . hope this helps

Hi kargi7,

I was chatting with you about your problem, and I hope that the screwdriver can help you to diagnose whether it is more a starter problem or more of a 'security' system problem.

Let me know what happened.

    Starter Relay
    Removal & Installation
    To Remove:

    1. Disconnect battery negative cable.
    2. Unlatch and open cover on Power Distribution Center.

    3. See fuse and relay position label attached to underside of PDC cover for starter relay identification and location.
    4. Remove starter relay from PDC.

    To Install:

    1. See fuse and relay layout label attached to underside of PDC cover for proper starter relay location.
    2. Place starter relay in proper receptacle in PDC.
    3. Push down firmly on starter relay until terminals are fully seated.
    4. Close and latch PDC cover.
    5. Connect negative battery cable.

I read over the chat and I noticed (to review) that you said you replaced the steering column.

Is your shifter in the steering column? If it is, the adjustment of the cable to the transmission 'Park' sensor that we discussed on the automatic transmission, could be off. Manual transmissions have a similar safety device for preventing starts while the car is in gear.

The 'done' message may mean that the security system will not allow you to try anymore attempts for a few minutes to start the car, because the key is not recognized.

I'm not sure why you hear any grinding noises at all.

I wish you luck on this repair.

Another thing that occurred to me is that when the battery power was lost, the memory for the key was lost, kind of like the radio codes get lost in newer cars when batteries are changed without having a battery backup in the cigarette lighter. Is this a plausible thing?

The battery condition and the connections are things I would first check, I agree.

My 2002 Kia sedona van was going down highway , it made a grinding sound , motor died , now starter just clicks, motor won't turn over : whats could be the problem ?

Starter clicking, not enough power to turn motor over. Check the battery, make sure charge is full. If it is, your starter is shot, replace it

Starter is just clicking...wont start

Starters go bad whether they are two hours or two years old. If you know how, try jumping the starter by crossing the power connection with the egnition on. If your headlights turn on then it's not the battery and I would get another starter. If it is close to the year mark, you may get a replacement starter for free.

90 Jeep wont turn over.

check clutch switch and starter relay in the power distribution box near the battery. Likely one of them has gone bad. Tell me what you find.

98 jeepwrangler won't start

This is basic, but first off, try to shift it into neutral, and try to start it. It is easy for the linkage to get out of adjustment, where it thinks the jeep is in gear. If that does not work, make sure you have battery power to the ignition and starter.
