Question about 1999 BMW 323 Series

1 Answer

The cover of my 2000 323ci E46 was recently forced into its compartment by a reckless passenger and now I cannot get it to go back up-- I have been told to look for an "emergency release" handle of some kind under the left rear seat, but I have removed the rear seats ENTIRELY and have never seen such a handle! It's gonna rain someday and when it does, well, it's gonna become an aquarium. Did BMW put the emergency release handle somewhere unusual in the 2000 E46 model?? Please advise before the flooding begins. THANK YOU!

BMW 2000 323ci E46 Top wont close Check the expandable luggage compartment flap. Read about it in your owner's manual. It must be down or your top won't work. Have you checked to see what the level of oil is in the pump? It is located behind the carpet in the left side of the trunk.

I assume you have all doors and trunk closed, engine running? work. It would be good news if this were the problem.Try to make it work by disconnecting the battery for 10-15 minutes as a last resort. Also check the convert. top fuses by glove box, if blown replace, if not pull them out and put them back in sometimes they get a corrosion factor that stops the top from powering up. I believe if the windows arer not closed they have sensors that will stop the top from working as well .

Thank you for responding! Let me elaborate a bit on the problem:

First, I get mixed up with the terms "Up", "Down", "Open", "Closed", etc. when referring to a convertible top. "Closed" means "Up", and "Open" means "Down", or some such, though a top can also be "Closed" when "Down", it seems, so I will try to stick to the words "Open" (meaning the top is folded away in the trunk compartment) and "Closed" (meaning it has latched overhead and the rain will not get it).

Okay. Now. Then engine runs fine: I start it up, everything seem to be operating normally. I then push the dashboard button that is supposed to close (i.e., expand) the convertible top. The light on the button turns red, which is normal, indicating that I want the top to close. In the past few weeks I have had to push this button longer and longer, it seems, to finally get the motor to engage and begin the process of folding out the top, but it has always worked eventually. The same has been increasingly true of my attempts to retract the top: hold the button, wait for it, wait, THERE it goes! But not until the aforementioned passenger became impatient with the closure process and just decided to "help move it along" by pushing it into place one day have I had the buttons just fail to work. I am concerned the hydraulics are ruined (is this unlikely?) and that no amount of fuse inspection is going to get the top back up.

What I want to do at this point is to simply, manually, close the top! I will gladly do this by hand, cranking whatever handles I need to crank, to get it up so that It won't continue to be scorched daily by UV radiation and invite the disaster that is going to be the next rain storm. I do not have the cash right not to take it to a dealership to have them repair the mechanism for me (plus I hear these mechanisms are VERY expensive to repair because they are so complicated). The car has seen better days, and any number of little things could now be preventing me from closing/ raising/ expanding the top. But I need to get it closed/ raised/ expanded as soon as possible.

You did not mention this as an option in your response to my original question... Is it NOT an option? IS there no manual release located somewhere inside the car?? Please advise. And thank you again for your other suggestions: I will try to give them a shot as well as soon as I am able to do so.

Remove the center of the rear seat back (where the subwoofer and/or ski pass is).

There's a little leather trim piece that goes from the center rear of the seat bottom to the base of the ski pass/subwoofer opening. the leather clips to a metal crossbar on the bottom center of the seatback. Pull that plastic clip off the metal bar. Pull back the leather strip, that will expose the emergency button and allen key.

    We are so close...

I found the subwoofer cover, and removed it. I found the leather strap and clip, and unclipped it. I found the slot for the allen wrench and the release button. I pushed the button (Hooray!) but I don't seem to have the corresponding allen wrench! Is this supposed to be located nearby or is it was it originally located in the toolbox in the trunk? (if the latter, it is no longer there... Am hoping it is the former).

    So close...!

Just get an allen key to match the size and you are done.... go to Auto Zone.

Rear deck stop light

the hyundai suggested method is by removing the back seat. the dealer will charge you around $100.
i have done it using an alternate method.
1. open the trunk
2. crawl in facing up
3. locate openings below the brake light
(the opening is offset from the bottom of the light and holder (very helpful of hyundai!!!)
4. remove the foam pieces if any.
5. remove the screws holding the cover in place. a magnetic philips screwdriver would be good.
6. unscrew the light using the tab at the bottom of the holder
7. push it up and into the passenger compartment.
8. the entire assembly should come out from inside the compartment.
9. replace the bulb.
10. saw off the extra plastic tab at the bottom of the holder ( will help in putting it back and for future installs)
11. replace everything in the reverse order: bulb , cover ( inside the passenger compartment), replace screws from inside the trunk.

Coincidences do happen. The main oxygen sensor is usually more in the engine compartment than out of it and the diagnostic oxygen sensor is screwed into the exhaust system just behind the CAT near the middle of the underside and is usually tucked well out of the way.

The tyre company would need to have been extremely reckless to have caused damage to either. Without evidence of that you have no grounds to proceed against them.

I have a 2006 saturn ion 2. Just recently, my ac is draining into the passenger floor board. How do i fix this ?

Bulletin No.: 03-01-39-011B
Date: November 22, 2005
Water Leaks Into Passenger Compartment Through HVAC Module Condensate Drain Tube When Parked on Incline/Uphill Position (Install Auxiliary Drain Tube Extension)
2003-2006 Saturn ION Sedans and Coupes
This bulletin is being revised to include the 2005 and 2006 model years. Please discard Corporate Bulletin Number 03-01-39-011A (Section 01 - HVAC).
When vehicle is parked on an incline with the front end up during a rainstorm or when driving uphill during a rainstorm, water may leak into the passenger compartment through the condensate drain tube opening of the HVAC module.
Water may drain out of the cowl drain, then drain down the front of the dash panel in the engine compartment and seep into the HVAC module condensate drain tube opening. The water then collects in the heater core cover and upon acceleration may leak into the passenger compartment through the heater core cover seams.
Correction 1. Open the hood and locate the HVAC module condensate drain tube in the engine compartment on the right side of the dash panel.
Important: During installation of the auxiliary drain tube, do not make contact with the HVAC module foam gasket located at the base of the HVAC module condensate drain tube. If the auxiliary drain tube is pushed on too far and makes contact with the foam gasket, water may leak into the passenger compartment.
2. Slide the auxiliary drain tube onto the HVAC module condensate drain tube and make sure that the auxiliary drain tube is angled downwards after installation.cansmo_121.gifcansmo_122.gif

Have you reviewed your Owners Manual for the Location of the Fuse?
There are Fuse Blocks in the Passenger Compartment and Under the Hood of almost all recent GM Vehicles.

The Owners Manual typically is REQUIRED READING fo ALL CAR AND TRUCK OWNERS. Start there first!

I cant find the instructions for the 1994 capri convertible top by E Z On Thanks Terry

to lower the top,

insert the trunk key into the key hole just to the left of the driver's seat and turn it 1/4 turn.

push in the red handle stabilizer and then pull down on the handle near where your head would be when driving

repeat for the passenger's side

lift up on the front most part of the convertible top and push slightly towards the rear.

holding that in place with one hand, pull back and then up on the backmost part of the convertible top leaving it inverted on top of the rest of the cover, or at least, up out of the way of the cover door.

once that part is up, you can let the front part go back forward

pull the cover door release lever near the keyhole mentioned in step one.. there are two latches one for the back seat to fold down, and one for the cover.

lift the cover door up and fold the back part of the convertible top back down to its original position

lift up again on the front most part of the convertible top and push it back, this time it should go back fairly easily and start to lower the back part of your top into the compartment. as you do this bit, it will be helpful to keep the rear window from buckling too much so as to avoid deformation.

when it is about 2/3 of the way in, you will want to push upward on second support bar from the back in the convertible top, if you dont, it will buckle up and not allow the top to fit in, and if you force it you will break your top.

once it is all in, you can shut the cover door and remove your key.

to put it up,

put the key in the aforementioned key-hole and turn it 1/4 turn as before.

pull the compartment latch and lift up on the compartment door.

pull the top all the way up so that the front of the top is resting on the windshield.

pull up the back part of the top so you can shut the compartment door

(seems obvious, but just for completeness sake) shut the compartment door

lift up on the front-most part of the top and push it slightly back to give your self slack to push the back part down and into place.

pay attention to both sides as you push the back of the convertible top into the groove on the top of the compartment door. (in it's shut position)

once it is in place, guide the plastic ridges on each side of the convertible top into the grooves on the sides of the compartment door.

from inside, pull the handles down so that the hooks on the bottoms are extended.

put each hook into its respective hole, and push the handle/lever into the closed position so that the red handle sabilizers snap into place.

the end.
