Question about Chevrolet Astro

1 Answer

I just purchased 1994 chevrolet astro van with 4.3l v6 engine and it seems to choke down when u try and accelerate a little hard to build up speed or when you try and give more gas going up a hill it does almost like a carburetor wit a flat spot, but it runs good but it just seems as when the gas pedal reaches a certain spot it dies down and once you press the pedal past the spot it runs fine, where to start other than the fuel filter i have changed that

Have you checked the tps or throttle position sensor?

i just purchased 1994 chevrolet - prev.gif next.gif Throttle Position Sensor Operation Throttle Position Sensors (TPS) are the only sensor in the Engine Management System (EMS) that the vehicle operator has direct control. The sensor is a potentiometer providing an analog signal to the computer. This signal represents how far the throttle plates have opened.
Engine Management Systems calculate how much air should have entered the engine and compares this value with the Manifold Absolute Pressure (MAP) sensor or Mass Air Flow (MAF) sensor value. The EMS uses this information to calculate fuel delivery and ignition timing requirements.
Engine Management Systems on vehicles equipped with an electronic transmission utilize the TPS sensor in combination with MAP and MAF sensor values to determine shift schedules and torque converter clutch application.
Some vehicles will also incorporate a throttle switch. The throttle switch is used to notify the EMS when the throttle is either at wide-open throttle or at idle.
Related Symptoms A faulty throttle position sensor or switch due to loose connections, bad grounds, high resistance in the circuit, or opens in the circuit can cause the following symptoms:

  • Bucking
  • Hesitation
  • Stumble
  • Chuggle
  • Stalling on Acceleration

i haven't checked the tps, how do i check it and where is it exact location on a chevy astro

The tps is located on the throttle body and is connected to the shaft of the throttle plate.

It can be tested by backprobing the connector with paper clips and connecting a multimeter to it and operating the throttle while the car's ignition is on but not running.

You should see a smooth voltage increase or decrease measured. Or, if you have the harness disconnected and the car is off, then you can see a smooth ohm (resistance) change as you operate the throttle. If there are any bad spots on it, then you can see it jump in resistance as you slowly adjust the throttle position sensor from no actuation to full actuation or wide open throttle.

I wish you luck on trying to diagnose your driveability problem.

the tps is attached to the throttle body and is operated by the angle of the shaft of the throttle plate on the side. It has wires going to it.

Also, if you happen to have an OBD-I scanner for this car, you may read the % value of the throttle opening directly through the scanner. This is, actually, easier than using a multimeter and small backprobing paper clips, because it tells you what the computer is seeing at any given time when the ignition is on and the harness is connected to the tps.

Is there a 'Service Engine Soon' light on?

Even if there is an intermittent Service Engine Soon Light, the codes can be read from the computer's memory which can aid in finding the root of the driveability problem.

I turn van on and go the van boggs down then the service engine light turns on and it smells like raw gas

Does it only bogg down on acceleration or all the time? If its only on acceleration you want to check for any loose vaccuum lines leading to the intake. In addition you want to check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail and make sure that the engine is getting fuel. If so check the injectors. A clogged fuel injector or one that is leaking can cause the bogging issue and the smell of raw gas.
