Yes. it can be done. the thermostat stops the water flow, and while your heating up 50% of your water in the engine, the other 50 % is getting cooled off in the radiator ( from the fan) when the temp gets to the preset temperature, the thermostat rotates the water. thus cooling the hotter 50% and heating the cooler water.

driving with no thermostat , will make all 100% of your water heat up at exactly the same time, and it doesn't allow time to trap and cool off some of your water. so as your water gets hot, then hotter, and hotter. its too much volume to cool off, and will eventually cause your car to overheat and blow head gaskets and cause major disaster.
also the thermostat regulates the temperature to a set heat ( which is the proper temp to run your engine at) and running your engine cooler that its supposed to be run, results in poor fuel economy .

Yes it can. The car will not get up to operating temperature as fast. It's never good to modify a car from its original factory specifications.

How do I replace thermostat on 1992 Buick Century 3300 6 cyl motor?

I do not have a diagram for you but you can get that from a parts store. If you follow the top hose back to the engine you will find your thermostat. You will probably have to take a couple of other things off to get to it like you air intake. Once you get to it this is a very easy fix. It is located in the fixture under that hose you tracked back.

Does 1992 buick century need thermastat to run properly? If it does what are the side effects of not having one in?

YES it does need a thermostat to run proper, which is why they are installed.
side effects are poor fuel economy , and not enough time to cool the heated water, which will overheat your coolant and then the engine. if your lucky it might not crack your cylinder heads, and maybe it wont blow your head gaskets. BUT . 20 bucks for a thermostat , or owning a useless car with blown engine ? your choice
