Question about 1998 Chevrolet K1500

K1500 1999 Vortec 350. Weak spark causing motor to flood. Suddenly spark gets brighter and the motor starts right up. It takes forever to get to that point though. Any thoughts?

Another issue that causes flooding in the Vortec 350 ( which, I assume you have) is the fuel injection spider. The spider assembly also contains a fuel pressure regulator if faulty can allow too much fuel to pass through the injectors fouling the plugs (a common problem), While your in the upper intake you might as well take care of your lower. A leaky inner seal on the lower intake can cause out to ceep in to your heads causing a faulty spark.

97 gmc sierra vortec 350,auto, rwd. Truck seems to have a prob,, thinkin it's fuel but not sure anymore.

If that fuel pressure spec was under load, that looks good to me. How long since a tune-up?
As far as a spark misfire, you can use a digital multimeter, engine idling, touch each spark plug wire one at a time. The readings I've seen is around .6 or .7 volts, but, if you get a reading bouncing off zero, that's where you start testing. You don't take spark plug wire loose and you don't penetrate the plug insulation, you just touch it with meter lead. It's an inductive reading.
There are several things that can cause misfire, fuel--spark--compression. You might do a cylinder balance test, engine idling, kill cylinders one at a time, if you kill a cylinder that has no effect on the rpms, that cylinder is dead or very weak. If you kill spark for this test, do it quickly, so you don't flood the cylinder.
The basics for a problem at higher rpms, check for blockage of some kind. The first two things I think of are fuel and exhaust.

2006 durango will not start

I would check for spark first with a spark plug tester. They are about $10 bucks and very easy to use. Then check all spark plugs for massive wear, and then check all spark plug wires for breaks or burn holes from motor. If not any of these, then I would check to timing belt. Once you diagnose these things, get back to me and we'll go from there. Good luck. P.S. Did the check engine light ever come on?

Takes a long time to start when cold. Start right up when warm.

hard starts are many causes.
ill list them in order, stats.
1: never tuned up, or not in last 60k, all this is in the opr. guide, lost it?
2: bad fuel or using summer fuel in winter (winter only car? or stale fuel? not a Year long DD (daily driver:?)
3: ECT reads too low or too high. for reality.
4: what engine?, the 92 comes in 16v and 8v , and are black /white different EFI wise.!!!

the key to finding this is easy. after the tune up , of course.
A: is spark good, when it dont start ( i check it while it dont start easy)
B: are the spark plugs dry or soaking wet ? tips?
if wet, ans spark is good, its flooding
if its dry and spark is good then its weak or no fueling.

just 2 steps and we work the path to the logical conclusions.
(weak spark? ) work that .
weak fueling, ECT reads too high? or low fuel pressure.
or partial clogged injectors?
flooding? well, ECT read too low. (you never stated ambient temperatures when starting, and this one fact can be real important.
its +46F here today( 75 yesterday)
my buddy its -30F, kinda different that....

flooding has many causes, on the 16v motor the 4 injector can leak.

so when engine runs, does the dash CEL lamp go off>?
this lamp must glow key on, if not the ECU is dead.
if not look here.

a dead eCU is called backup mode.
a partial failure is CEL glows all the time., and is in limphome mode.

We start at a tune up. ever skip the 60K ???? miles???? or multiples there off?

I have a 99 jimmy with the 4.3 vortec. I have spark, and 61 pounds of fuel pressure. when turned over it act like it starves for fuel and is so close to starting but wont even with starting fluid. I d

It can take 70psi to start a vortec engine cold. It should start on starting fluid tho.
You might want to look at a couple of spark plugs to see if they are in good enough condition to run. The spark could be weak under compression if the plugs are worn.

1996 350 suburban will not start without starter fluid. 35 lbs. fuel pressure with key on[not running]. Runs great after I get it started. Have changed fuel filter 2 times. After running if left off 20...

The vortec engine has a time delay fuel pump relay, check that...Was your pressure reading with engine running?
Test your injectors. Check the coolant temp sensor, it will confuse the ECM if it is out of range...mainly when the engine is cool. Check the ignition for weak spark, coil resistance. Check the air flow sensor....I would stop using starting fluid immediately, the volatile conditions it creates could cause damage. Hope this helps.

2.2 4 cylander wont start unless i floor the gas pedal and leave it there while cranking the motor forever. slowly it gathers itself and starts but sounds very distorted. take off and starts to run...

You can check to see if it is the catalyst by having an exhaust shop do a back-pressure test or you can unbolt the catalyst pipe before you start the car to see if that fixes the issue. This problem can also be caused by low fuel pressure. Low fuel pressure is caused by a clogged in-tank strainer, clogged fuel filter, or a weak fuel pump. If the pressure is low the car would be running lean, which can also cause the engine to run hot. Another thing that can cause this problem is a weak ignition system, either from leaking spark plugs, carbon tracking on the distributor, or worn/improperly gapped spark plugs.

Vortec 350 knock on start-up.

Is it a ping or a knock? It could be the initial timing is not set correctly. Are you losing coolant? It could be a leaking head gasket and is leaking a small amount of anti-freeze into one of the cylinders. If it is a bearing it will get worse and worse, is the oil pressure good? I guess I'd take it back to the rebuilder.

I havea 97 silverado with a 350 vortec in it. im haveing a hard time starting it up. the eng. turns,has fuel presure,and has spark at the plugs.but the spark on the plugs is a orenge color not a bright...

Hello. I can assist you. You need to get your truck on a scanner. You can have this done at a dealership or at many autoparts stores, often auto zone [for instance]. the scan will isolate the problem so that it can be solved.

Timing on vortec 350youkon how to do this

unplug distributor! find #1 cylinder, take out spark plug,placr finger over spark plug hole,bump starter until compression blows finger from spark plug hole,align mark on harmonic balancer with 0 mark on timing cover. engine is on compression stroke.install distributor with rotor contact pointing toward #1 wire location on distributor cap. install plug. install wire. engine will start.
