Question about 1994 Oldsmobile Cutlass Supreme

Sometimes when i start my car and i leave to idol all of a sudden the engine acclerate by itself and i dont know whats cause it either the censors has gone bad i just dont kno do u have any suggestions

I have seen on these the AC control unit short out and the computer thinking the AC is on rev the engine up. Try this, actually turn the AC on and put the controls and vents to where your comfortable fora few days. If the problem does not reaccur then suspect the control unit. A diagnostic scanner would show the AC is on when all the controls are in the off position if this is the problem. An intermittant problem could also be seen with a scanner when the problem occurs. Other than this my next choice is you have vacuum leak either on the intake or a vacuum line is cracked somewhere.

Try the ignition module or the ignition switch itself. I have seen them before where they will only get spark in the crank mode. Also check and make sure that your wires are on the correct side of the starter solenoid and not only getting power when you are cranking.

I bet you the sensor is working great...its your thermostat thats done for. Sensor I believe is on the engine block itself...but as a rule...they either work or they dont.

I am not sure about your exact car. Im sorry, but I dont know EVERYTHING. However most vac leaks are caused by a hose. If not the hose then by a loose intake manifold, or bad manifold gasket. Sometimes the manifold itself can crack.

The EASIEST way I have found to run down a vac leak is to buy a can of SPRAY carb cleaner, most autoparts stores have this stuff. With the engine running spray the carb cleaner near suspected leak sites. The ends of hoses, down along the intake gaskets, pretty much anywhere air can go. When you find the leak your engine will SPUTTER. Sometimes it will even die. Carb cleaner doesnt burn that great apparantly and when it gets SUCKED IN to the fuel air mix it throws it off.

Once you find the site of your leak the fixes are pretty easy. From what I have read recently alot of people seem to be getting away with just tightening bolts this winter. I dont know if the sudden change in temp or just everyones cars seem to be about the same age.

Anyhow thats how I find intake leaks.

When i start my vehicle on it will immediately start idoling and when i drive it it idols as well the idol or whatever like i dont know if it idols ubt it does shake


it sounds like the engine is "starving" meaning the mass air controle is not set right same thing happends to same exact truck only way to find out without a mechanic is take off the plastic on the engine and look in the top back of the engine and there should be a black plastic piece with a metal bar going into a metal piece if the plastic piece is not in the grove then it has to be fixed so it dosnt come out of it(idk how to fix it but in can be rigged to stay in the groove)

check that the map sensor vacuum hose is not leaking a leaking hose or a bad map sensor will cause the problem so will a bad cooant temp sensor. wireing to the above could be shorted or open.if a fuel injector were leaking or the controll wire to it were shorted to ground that also would cause it.if all the plugs were black when you changed them then look for an across the board problem like a sensor/vac hose/. if it had only one or two black plugs then look for grouned fuel injector wire or leaking injectors. one other possability could be a ruptured diaphram in the fuel pressure regulator. pull off vac hose and look for gas in the hose, start engine with hose off and see if gas comes out of the regulator if either have gas then replace regulator. oh forgot, that hose on the regulator has to have vacuum on it if it dont or hose leaks it will make fuel pressure to high and cause the problem. the exception to the vacuum at all times on the map censor and pressure regulator would be the 2.2/2.5l turbo. the vacuum to those censors is controlled with solonoids operated by the computer.
with engine off turn the key on/off/on/off/on and watch the check engine light it will start flashing the codes it will be like blink short pause then blink blink blink. that would be a code thirteen. if it has more than one code then after first it will blink out another always 2 digit codes if you miss count the blinks then turn off key for a minute and repeat. let me know what the codes are

My 99 accord goes into high idol when starting and if you touch the gas it revs high then low till i turn the car off . if i leave it on high idol after starting and dont touch the gas it eventually will...


check for air leaks on the emission system, if fine, check for the throthle posittioner disconect it, if idles good, replaceit, next go to the idle motor, is next to the throthle body, remove it and clean it with a good carburator cleaner, install it and start the car.

Very bad idol and run condition.


sounds like a possible water temp issue... check your thermostat and/or water temp sensor. when you first start your engine the computer uses the water temp reading to do a 'cold start' scenario, more fuel. once you reach normal operating temp the fuel should be cut back. if the thermostat is not opening and closing properly this can cause strange readings from the water temp sensor (which is mounted near the thermostat)... unlikely the sensor is bad, but a possibility... more likely the thermostat.
