Question about Ford Contour

1 Answer

Replaced alternator, Again, on 1998 Ford Contour SVT, 2.5L 6 cyl. Alternator working fine but engine running very rough, not good power, etc. Checked power to coil pack, 12.5 volts, no power to plugs or wires. Car won't start. Cranks good. Replaced Coil pack, it was cracked in several places and thought it might be the problem. No start. Checked power at coil connector plug only one post of 4 has power when unplugged. All have power when plugged in. Is this correct or bad plug? Any ideas on no start. thanks

First off,I hope you are using a digital, not analog meter, the analog meter can blow the computer.Check all fuses, and then the crank shaft sensor maybe the problem, they are bad to go out on these models. It is mounted most likely on the transmission, let me know if this was helpful, thank you. There are two types used,so look at the plug in.Replaced alternator, Again, on 1998 - d8b203b.jpg4c46e0b.jpg33f302f.jpg

Using digital ohmeter, will the crankshaft sensor keep the car from starting or just cause it to run rough once started?

Replacing the fuse the first time was the right move, becuase it could have been a fluke that it blew. Replacing it again and again was not! You should have found out EVERYTHING that the #2 fuse controlled and verified that the components weren't pulling excessive amperage (shorted condition). By replacing the fuse over and over, you might have made the problem worse by subjecting good components to something that was shorted.

BTW next time pick the oldest guy at autozone to help you, if the counter help knew their stuff they would have told you the same thing I just did!

My 98 Ford Contour won't start on its own. I can get a jump, but several electrical features still don't work and the power slowly seeps away. I noticed the negative cable hanging loose and can't find...

The negative cable needs to be solidly attached to a good ground point on the engine, NOT on the body. After you do this, check the alternator voltage output with the engine running. It should be around 14 volts, plus or minus 1/2 colt or so. If it is less than this, you will need to replace the alternator. This is not a trivial job with either engine, unfortunately.

I have an issue with a 98 ford contour v6. all the lights pulse when the alternator is charging above idle. alt has been replaced.checked the fuse at rear of engine.any ideas about this problem.

This is usually caused by a failing regulator within the alternator, however, it would be a good idea to also check all engine to chassis grounding straps. Thank you.

Got a 1999 ford contour had alternator rebuilt replaced spark plugs..car started dieing while in idle..took it to shop and they replaced the cam and crankshaft sensors..as long as the alternator wasnt...

It still sounds like the alternaror is putting out to many amps and more than 13.5 volts when hooked up but what you could do is to borrow one from someone else and try it if it runs ok then YOU NO THE ANSWER TO THAT

But let me know how you get on . Ron

Speedometer Doesn't Work ..

Yes. You also want to check your alternator. Weird as it sounds our electronic dash on a Lincoln had us doing 55mph at a stop. It was the alternator and you may need to check your backup generator for clean power. There is some kind of electronic term regarding "Sine" waves, that apparently matters alot. Good Luck

no problem. If you are getting that low of voltage on a load then you might want to test the alternator as well to make sure it is running at capacity.

Engine won't run properly then dies and won't start without charge

Sounds like your alternator is shot. Remove your alternator and take it into Advance Auto Parts store and they can do a test on it. Don't waste any more money on batteries until you get this checked.

Also, don't be fooled by some sellers. A rebuilt alternator is just as good as a new one.

98 Ford Contour not charging

I dont know if yours is a 4 or 6 cyl. On the back of the motor by the firewall there is a 175 amp mega fuse inline on the positive cable comming from the battery. On the 4 cyl it is below the air box center of the back of the motor. On the 6 cyl, it is below the coil pack on the center back of the motor. Be sure to disconnect the negitave battery cable before you attempt this. There is a 3 inch long cover you pop off and you will see it. It takes a 10mm socket to unbolt it. Remove the fuse and ohm it out, if there is no continuity, you have a bad fuse, replace it. I have had 3 people replace their bats and alts ($350 in parts) just to find out it still had the problem. An $8 fuse. Good luck and hope this helps..
