A coil goes bad when it's under stress. What causes stress? Wrong spark plug, wrong spark plug gap, improper air/fuel mixture that causing misfires. Any time a spark plug misfires, it can wreck an IGN coil. The spark has to go SOMEWHERE
Great that you are checking/measuring the spark plug gap...many people overlook this setting...you can not count on the new plug having the correct gap...Most plugs with today's electronic ignitions use the 35 mm gap...however, your best answer is to ask your Auto Parts store what the gap should be when you purchase the new plugs...Good job, hope this helps.
I am looking at my owners manual for my 2003 Trailblazer Vortec 4.2L L6 (this is the inline 6, the option for a V6 is not available for the 6 cylinder). Per the owner's manual Spark Plug gap is .042 inches and the firing order is 1-5-3-6-2-4
I have been told by mechanics and 2 auto stores that the gap should be .043. I don't know where people are getting .060. but my plugs are .043 and my trailblazer does not misfire or run poorly. Also, check the gap always, even if it's pre gapped because the handling of spark plugs could cause a change in gap. IE the plug bouncing in the box, vibration, etc.
there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) on this issue , with directions to install foam weatherstrip to the AIP.(air intake panel) . TSB #06-06-04-048b J5
