Question about 1999 Ford Explorer

2 Answers

Can I get a free unlock code for my 1999 Ford Explorer to unlock the doors? I am locked out of my sole means of transportation, and I only have the key for the ignition, when I purchased the vehicle, I was only given the one key and was misinformed that it would start the engine and lock and unlock the doors. However that was not the case. I also noticed there was a keypad on the drivers door. However, I wasn't given a code or any instructions on how to operate such a device. Having never owned a car that had such a feature, I am at a loss on how use the keypad correctly.

Unfortunately, your code is inside the locked vehicle. If you can get a locksmith to open it for you, here is where to find the code:

Look in the trunk behind the plastic cover where your tire jack and wrench are. There will be two plastic knobs that you will have to turn to open and lift it off. The code will be on the fender wall. The code is real close the the plastic and difficult to see. If you dont see it there, then try looking around in that area for a 5 digit code, in the fender well or around the jack, or even around the rear washer bottle. Most times it's around the jack. Newer year models have moved the code behind the door trim panels.

Your Ford Dealer can help you with this ... and ... he is one of the few who can help you with this. You will need proof of ownership, and the VIN which is stamped on a piece of metal you can view through the windshield, driver side. If you are able to drive it to the dealer, all the better.

Why in the world you put yourself in this situation is a mystery. One key - only way to get around? Keys are made at nearly every hardware store and auto parts store I have ever been in and lots of other places in between.

If none of this works for you, your police department may agree to 'break and enter' your truck if you can prove ownership. If that fails ... there is always the local professional Locksmith.

Remember to invest in a spare key.

The code is on the keyless entry module, digit code, It is on a plastic ard in the owner manual packet, the delaer often records it on the sales invoice they keep, the dealer can extract it with his scan tool. the module is behind the left rear trim panel.

Remove the LH rear quarter trim panel; refer to Section 501-05 .
Disconnect the two remote anti-theft personality (RAP) module electrical connectors.

Remove the two RAP module fasteners.

    Remove the RAP module.

Your factory code is on a card in the owners manual. If that is lost, access the control module in the cargo area behind the left cover panel.

You MIGHT be able to see the code printed on it, or you might need to pull it out in order to see it.

Power door locks; unlock but not lock.

replace switch. if problem on all doors replace master on driver side door. switch has two modes: lock & unlock. Unlock is working, lock is not working, means power is good, individual switches are good, master switch is bad. Replace from used car fine.

Unfortunately, This is a very common problem with Ford Explorers! Ford replaces the locks when it encounters this issue. I managed to unseize my passanger door and tailgate lock, but the drivers door lock is broken beyond repair. You can purchase new remotes for your explorer and program them very easily. Just google ford key fobs...
