Question about Ford Windstar

1 Answer

We have a Ford Windstar 1998 and for the past few weeks have had to keep adding power steering fluid every few days, because the steering starts to make a whinning noise and then its gone once we add fluid. Also since having our brakes fixed several months ago, every time we take a left turn or go around a left had corner there is a grinding noise. Whats that all about ??

I have a 1999 ford windstar and it's power steering start to whine about a week ago don't under stand why add more fluids helps but then it starts again also can hear air when i'm going to park and turn...

Check your Power steering lines especially where they may clip to a plastic holder on the frame. Water and salt spray like to corrode the line at these points. Sometimes you may need to disconnect the line and take it off and test it for pressure holding capability.
Make sure you use the correct fluid for your Brand. Sometimes the vanes inside the pump wear, especially if it ran dry. Then the unit will need to be replaced.
Last, when steering pivots, like balljoints wear, they cause more drag making the unit to work harder to steer. The pump can squeal under the added resistance.

Black power steering fluid

Power steering fluid has not been changed in eons, i suggest draining the fluid, refilling with a cheap fresh fluid, then bleed the system by turning the wheels from lock to lock a few times with the cap of the steering fluid master cylinder off, then drain the system again & refill with good quality power steering fluid - it should be pink & smell sweet, - the power steering fluid that is!!

I have a 2001 ford windstar van, & my power steering fluid is reddish in color...is that normal?

Yes. The fluid is also red for the Transmission on Ford products and some others. The color is to aid in leak detection, just as Antifeeze is colored to help spot leaks.

The noise you are hearing and feeling is very likely due to a low fluid level. I'd suggest you start by filling the power steering reservoir to the correct level with the correct fluid. Cycle the steering from lock to lock a few times to see if the noise gets better or goes away completely. Monitor the fluid level to determine how quickly the fluid leaks out and also to see if you can tell where the leak is coming from.

Be aware though that the longer you drive the car with a low fluid level condition, the more damage you will cause and the more expensive the repair will be.

98 ford windstar/ power steering pump changed twice as of this week/ makes a loud whinning noise /can'tn keep fulid it, lines have been changed, no visiablem leaks,

Either you have air in the system cuasing the pump to " cavitate" or not enough fluid or the wrong fluid.
Are these pumps you put in new, used or re-built ?
Fluid HAS to be going somewhere.

You ran it low so It made the noises which was burning the fluid. Just add some more fluid. It should stop making noises but if it does you may have ran it too long without enough fluid
