Question about 2003 Mercury Grand Marquis

The Windshield Wipers in low & delay settings don't work (They run in High Speed only), Gear Shift Arm won't come out of Park (car will start, but when I step on the Break Peddle the Gear Shift Arm stays locked in Park), and the Tail Lights don't work. I Checked fuse and the Break Peddle Switch and replaced the Lighting Control unit (#3W7T-13C788-AC), none of this correct the problem. Then I replaced the Multi-Function Switch on the steering column and I checked all the ground connections I could find. Still no change in the problem. At this point I am out of ideas. Help!

    I have been working with a local mechanic, and he has gone over everything that I have done and checked all the suggestions that has been posted, including disconnecting the Deactivation Switch, and the problem still persists. We don't have power to all the components, so we believe there may be a break in the wiring some where. At this point, we could sure use a good wiring diagram, so we can check for any breaks in the wiring and/or connectors. Do you have something that shows all the connections between the Multi-Function Switch, the Lighting Control Module, the Break Switch, the Park Locking Cylinder, Driver's side Door Module and the Tail Lights, which also shows the Fuses, Grounds and Wire Colors, that you could send? It needs to be in page form, with details large enough that we can read it. Thank you

    Who is this guy? Dose he know anything about auto electronics? The advice he gives would indicate that he either didn't read the prior suggestions, or he doesn?t know what he is talking about. Can anyone there just send me a Wiring Diagram for my Car??? It needs to shows all the connections between the Multi-Function Switch, the Lighting Control Module, the Break Switch, the Park Lock Cylinder, the Driver?s Side Door Module and the Tail Lights. It also needs to show Fuse, Grounds and Wire Colors.
    Pleeeeese make it large enough that I can print it out and still read it.

The wipers circuit board will need to be replaced to have all speeds & THE DELAY TO OPERATE AGAIN
The shift cable or the shift release solenoid is broken
The brake light switch operate the brake lights. The tail lights work off the head light switch only

    Yes, I have checked all the fuses under the dash and under the hood. I located the ones directly associated with the problems and checked them. They were all good, so I went ahead and checked all of them to make sure I didn't over look something.

    Hello! Look under the hood...directly in front of the brake fluid...Do you see an orange switch with a connector? It is the Deactivation Switch (cruise control)...It has two wires...Light Green/Red and Orange...It is fed by the same battery source that feeds the Brake Pedal Switch and the Multifunction Switch (wipers)...

    There is a Technical Service Bulletin (TSB)...# 16770...Written on 09/2003 for your car...It concerns the adjustment of the DS...It also relates to engine compartment fires...If you look on the drivers door a tag with the # 16770 will be there...Indicating the TSB was performed on your vehicle...If not...It needs to be installed...

    Disconnect the connector from the DS and see what effect it has on the problem...Saailer

Do you have something that shows all the connections between the Multi-Function Switch, the Lighting Control Module, the Break Switch, the Park Lock Cylinder and the Tail Lights. Also showing Fuse, Grounds and Wire Colors.

    FIG : Wipers and Washers Hello! Here is a print of wipers...I believe your have more than one fault...Did the mechanic check the brake pedal switch electrically? On the PCM connector...Pin #92 is a Dark Green wire...When the brake is depressed there must be +12 volts on that wire...Push a safety pin into the rear of the in-place connector on the Dark Green wire...Connect the + probe of meter to this pin...Connect the - probe to ground...Start the engine...Press the brake pedal...Read the meter...Tell me what you read...Saailer

There are two relay's in the under hood fuse / relay box . Wiper relay an wiper relay 2 . Maybe one is bad . also check fuse #14 25 amp. Wiper fuse.Plus the BCM - body control module has a hand in making the wipers work . Are you familiar with automotive electronic control modules ?

When WASH, MIST, DELAY, LOW, or HIGH is detected, the BCM energizes the wiper micro relay by suppling voltage to the relay coil. This allows battery voltage from the WIPER fuse to flow through the relay switched input then through the contacts and out the relay switched output to the wiper 2 relay switch contacts. Since the wiper 2 relay switch contacts are normally closed to the low speed circuit of the windshield wiper motor, the motor will operate at low speed.

Wiper control module location on a 2000 f250


Did you check the wiper relay's in the under hood fuse box ? There are two ,wiper run/park relay & wiper high low relay ! Also ,did you check fuse's ? fuse # 11 - 30amp location cental juction box . The wiper switch is a input to the GEM module . Generic electronic module . The module in most cases isn't the problem ! Learning how to test these electronic systems is , people do not know how to test so they just replace parts . What they should do is take the vehicle to ford certified Technician who has the knowledge and testing equipment to find an fix it .

The generic electronic module (GEM) receives inputs from the following:
  • multifunction switch
  • anti-lock brake control module (vehicle speed signal [VSS])
  • ignition switch
The GEM uses these inputs to control the outputs to the following:
  • windshield wiper high/low relay

99 f350 super duty, wipers would only come on sometimes. I changed wiper motor now they still don't work


The generic electronic module (GEM) responds to the windshield wiper control commands by interpreting inputs from the steering column multi-function switch. The speed dependent wipers will compensate for the extra moisture that accumulates on the windshield at higher speeds, except when the multi-function switch is in the INT 1 position. At higher speeds, the speed dependent feature shortens the delay between wipes when using the variable interval wipers. Delays will automatically adjust at speeds between 16 and 105 km/h (10 and 65 mph).
Testing should be done before replacing any parts . And if you don't know about (GEM) Control module controlled system's your best bet , take it to a qualified repair shop . The first place to start trouble shooting these systems is with a scan tool that can read GEM module codes .

2005 ford escape wiper and washer has no power. cant hear it engage when on but was working a week ago. how can i troubleshoot it and find the fuse

Windshield Wiper Operation
The smart junction box (SJB) supplies power to the multifunction switch from the SJB fuse 25 (20A) when the ignition switch is in the ON or ACC position. The multifunction switch supplies power to the windshield wiper motor for the HIGH or LOW/INTERMITTENT input, depending on the multifunction switch position selected. The SJB also supplies power directly to the windshield wiper motor from fuse 25 (20A) when the ignition switch is in the ON or ACC position for RUN/PARK operation. When the multifunction switch is in the LOW, HIGH, or INTERMITTENT position, power is supplied to the windshield wiper motor, which moves the wipers off the park position. Once the wipers are off the park position, an internal switch in the windshield wiper motor switches to the run/park position which directs power to the wiper switch then back to the wiper motor. This maintains power to the windshield wiper motor to complete the wipe cycle. When the cycle is complete, the internal switch in the windshield wiper motor switches back to the park position. If the multifunction switch is in the LOW or HIGH position, power is supplied from the multifunction switch and another wipe cycle starts. If the multifunction switch is in the INTERMITTENT position, the windshield wipers remain parked until the internal relay in the multifunction switch supplies power to the windshield wiper motor. The internal relay supplies power after a time delay that is determined by the 1 of 9 intermittent switch settings.

What is the relay location in the relay box


The problem would be in the stalk controller. The wiper Relay is what provides power to the motor for all settings, the delayed wipers, low speed, and high speed. There are not 3 relays, but 1 for all functions. If you have power to the high setting, the relay is working.

2001 grand marquis windshield wipers runs in high nothin else wont go in park either


If you are having problems with the wipers not wanting to park, that is usually the park switch inside the wiper motor. The low and interm speed settings could be the delay module which could also affect park.
You may need a shop manual to troubleshoot the circuits.

In delay cycle wiper hesitates


Hi,
The hesitation of the wipers in delay cycle is normal. You can twist the nob on the end of the arm to speed up or slow down the hesitation.
If you are driving in a light mist and the wipers ran at normal speed most of the time the would be wiping a dry windshield. Chattering and bouncing. With the delay set at the right speed the wipers only go on every so often, No dry chattering. In a full rain just twist the knob past the delay cycle to get low or high speed from the wipers.

Wipers would not park, customer forced down wiper arm and broke off arm. Now no electric to wipers.


Before 1995 Ford interval wiper systems mainly consisted of a switch, the motor and the interval governor (also called the wiper control module or 'WCM'). The basic wiper systems just parked the wipers at the end of their travel at the base of the windshield and involved just one park switch.

The more complex systems not only stopped the wipers at the base of the windshield, but would actually recess them below the windshield to park them. This involved using two park switches to turn the wiper motor in a reverse direction. These were installed on the Crown Victoria, Grand Marquis, Town Car, Taurus and Sable.

The wiper switch (named 'Multi-Function Switch' on most models) had a common return or ground circuit and two input or signal circuits to the WCM. Basically, the switch was two modified potentiometers that varied the resistance to ground for the two signal circuits. When the wiper switch was placed in the low or high position, the WCM looked at only one of the circuits- the 'mode input' -and controlled the wiper motor accordingly. If the wiper switch was placed in any of the interval positions, the mode input told the WCM that the switch was in an interval position. The WCM then looked at the second input - the 'delay input' - and used it to determine the amount of delay between wipes.

1) To run the wipers on low or high speed, the WCM provided constant power to the wiper motor on the proper circuit to provide the requested speed. Dual park switch motors
1.1 The first park switch operated basically in the same way as the single switch systems.
1.2 The second park switch worked in the opposite manner- when the wipers were off the park position, the second switch provided a ground for the wiper motor. Power and ground were now provided by the park switches.
1.3 When the wipers needed to park, the polarity of the switches changed, and thus provided reversed voltage to drive the motor in the opposite direction.

2) To run the interval wipers, the WCM applied voltage to the wiper motor only momentarily to get the wipers off the parked position.
3) The electro-mechanical park switch made a circuit between the power feed in and the output to the WCM. Power was provided from the park switch through the WCM and back to the wiper motor.
4) When the wipers reached the park position, the park switch made a circuit between the ground and the output to the WCM, and the motor stopped running. The wiper motor and the wiper switch have remained much the same as the single park switch motors of the past.

The main difference is that the switch has become an input to the GEM instead of the WCM.
1) When the wiper switch is placed in the low or high position, the Run-Park relay is grounded by the GEM to provide constant voltage to the High-Low relay, which then provides voltage to the proper circuit of the wiper motor.
2) High-Low relay is in the low speed position unless grounded by the GEM.
3) The park switch not only feeds the Run-Park relay but is now also an input to the GEM. This tells the GEM when the wipers are in the parked position so it can de-energize the Run-Park relay.
4) When any of the interval positions are selected, the Run-Park relay is momentarily grounded to get the wipers off the parked position
5) The park switch then provides voltage to the other set of contacts in the Run-Park relay.
6) When the GEM de-energizes the Run- Park relay, voltage is still provided from the park switch to the High-Low relay and the wipers complete the stroke.

  • In HI position, electric current will bypass a portion of the armature winding causing the windshield wiper motor to operate faster.
  • When the turn signal and windshield wiper switch is moved to the OFF position, the windshield wiper motor will continue at low speed until the park switch outer contacts open.
  • When the park switch contacts open, the windshield wiper motor stops in the park position.
Interval
When the turn signal and windshield wiper switch is in the interval position:
  • The wipers make single wipes separated by pauses.
  • The rotary switch is on the end of turn signal and windshield wiper switch .
  • The length of the pause can be set from approximately 1 to 17 seconds.
  • Length of pause decreases as the rotary switch is rotated away from off.
  • Length of pause increases as the rotary switch is rotated toward off.
While in the interval wiper mode:
  • It is normal to hear a slight click at the beginning of each on/pause cycle. NOTE: When using interval wipers, the first wipe may not occur until after a pause of up to 17 seconds.
