Question about 1998 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

My 1998 VW Jetta runs fine when idling but when im driving the gas will just cut off and i have to let off of it and press the gas back down for it to go again, i replaced the fuel pump and the fuel regulator and its still doing the same thing, I think it might be a sensor but i dont know which one.

My 98 jetta 2.0 will not hold idle by itself until reaching operating temp. then a good long idle. in drive it completly shuts down after about 10-15 sec driving. will start up run for a few sec and shut...

Try replacing your Engine Coolant Temp Sensor, it's cheap and easy to replace. Just remember do it when the coolant is cool to work with before you start cracking a pressurized system.

2002 Jetta 1.8t cuts offs sporadically

Here is the common cause of surges, stalls at stops, slow idle speed, erratic idle speed, rough idle and engine hesitation (and other problems), it is in most cases the idle speed control air-bypass valve and or throttle valve and upper intake, these area's get full of gunk and combustion residue over the miles and cause idle issues (stalls, low idle) like yours, Get a can of intake cleaner from any local parts store, not carb spray, intake cleaner, it is made by a company called CRC, remove the air intake hose to the engine, hold the idle high so the engine won't stall, then spray the can of cleaner into the intake while keeping the engine running, use at least 1/2 the can, shut down the engine and disconnect the battery for 5 minutes, then restart and complete a number of mixed driving cycles, town, freeway, stop and go etc., after a few days the problem will go away as the system will relearn to the clean intake.

I just bought a 1998 jetta vw and it dont seem to idle proper at times seems like she jumps or jolts also when u drive 55 km plus it seems to jump or jolt and every now and then it seems like u can smell...

Hello,
Your particular model is susceptible to ignition lead and spark plugs breaking down, as these items are not the cheapest people tend to overlook them on full services.
Renewing leads and plugs will improve economy and performance no end.
I hope this points you in the right direction?
