Yes, All the years of the ZX2 utilize the same engine. 1998-2003 are all the same except for ECU programing and the MAF wiring. You should not have a problem.

This really sounds like your running out of fuel. an engine will back-fire as it goes lean. I would start by replacing the fuel filter, it's just maintenance anyways, and if that doesn't solve your problem you may have a bad fuel pump. It would be a good idea to have the fuel pressure checked under load before replacing it though as they are expensive. I would hook up a fuel pressure gauge and tape it to the front window while driving. If you can't do this, see if you can find a shop that will. They won't like taking instructions from you, but this is an important test to determine if the pump can prvide the volume the engine needs while under boost. The fuel pressure should be 28psi at idle and should rise to 42 psi under boost. If it can't sustain 42 psi under boost, you have a bad fuel pump.

Hope this helps,
Dave

put a can of seafoam in your fuel tank at your next fill up after doing the following
replace your pcv valve
replace all the loose, worn, broken, or missing vacuum hoses one the entire engine
clean the air breather tubes, the whole air cleaner, and if necessary the air filter
that should do it for you

Leak of power start up ok engine sound like its got a air sucking in

Check the PCV hose that goes to the intake manifold. Over time they will collapse and leak. It is on the back side of engine just below the throttle body.

My 2002 Ford Escape starts, but won't stay running. When I take my foot off the gas and press the brake to put it in gear, it stalls. Alternator, battery and starter are new.

check the air intake hose from the air filter box to the intake for any leaks make sure it's on and tight. If that's good I would lean to the idle air control valve which is bolted on the upper intake near the throttle body normally round bolted to intake with (2) 8mm bolts. Before you replace it unbolt it and make sure it's not clogged up and make sure that the hole on the intake isn't clogged up.

Where is the pvc valve on a 2002 ford taurus? and how do i replace it?

Hello
The PCV is below the EGR (exhaust gas recirculation valve) valve close to the intake manifold below the intake air sensor, there is a tube running to it from the engine to recirculate exhaust air with fresh air, there is a clamp holding it to the air intake that you need pliers to remove, then you need to turn counter-clockwise 90 degrees to remove, do the reverse to install. to make it easier to access remove the upper intake. The PCV valve is not visible, however, you can identify it by the 3" inch long rubber hose that connects to the steel line running into the bottom of the intake. I have the part and am going to replace it soon, although Ford really makes it difficult to remove it - PCV valve is located just under the throttle body. remove air cleaner assembly from throttle body and you will see a u shaped hose running horizontally.

My 2001 ford escort zx2 has a vacumn leak in the pvc elbow it also was kicking back an engine lean code. it runs but idle runs like it is trying to die when stopped. i've replaced the 02 sensor, plugs,...

for sure its the pcv elbows and hose.
you can only get the part from the dealer and they do not sell the elbows seperatly.you will need to get the whole hose.
they are 30 dollars from the dealer .you get the tube with new elbows on both ends.
its on the driver side under the hood and goes under the thermostat housing.
it is very easy to confuse it with the water heater hose.
the pcv tube connects to the pcv valve then routes back to the bottom of the intake tubes.both elbows are heat burt and torn open.
you will have to replace this new part and for sure all your check engine lights will stop as this air is getting by the mass sensor and not accounting for it in the fuel delivery there for showing a lean mix.a vaccum leak will let unaccounted air in the system and the computer will not deliver fuel for this air .not enough fuel is a lean burn.i just did one on this car 2 days ago.take off the intake tubes so you can reach down in there to take off the old .
let me know if it helps.
