What causes a 2003 mercury mountaineers temp guage to go from cold to hot then back to normal in seconds while driving.

There could be a number of causes of a fluctuating temperature gauge but most commonly is the thermostat. It could also be a head gasket, cooling fan problem or the actual temperature sending unit. I hope this helps!

Well car shows its hot but kicks out cold air maybe 30 minutes driving or sometimes immediately have heat prob just occurred 24 days ago


if temp guage is normal but no heat in cab your heater rad may be blocked or the control flaps not directing the hot air properly ,,, older cars had a heater tap that controlled the hot water flow into the heater radiator ,,,,

2003 mountaineer V8 Temp gauge jumps to hot not over heating. Replaced thermostat, no change


The Engine Temp. sensor is bad. it is under the intake manifold. if there is a miss also check under the coils over the spark plugs. If there is Coolant in the spark plug holes .then the intake gasket is leaking. The intake manifold needs to come off to change the coolant sensor. When off look for corrosion on the cylinder head at the coolant port. If there is corrsion then the cylinder head must be replaced.
