Question about 1988 Pontiac Fiero

1 Answer

Have an 88gt that has ran beautifully for years. All of the sudden, I have no spark. ICM right, nope just tried #3 1 gm, 2 auto zone. The problem seems intermitten. Power goes all the way up to the coil, but no spark out of the coil. Tried wire replacement from coil to distributor, new coil, has a new distributor, new rotor, still no spark. With key on voltage light blinks, not sure what that means, if anything. What else could it be, any advice will be appreciated

Did you check grounding? Poor Grounding can lead to all sorts of electrical problems. Check motor to frame/body ground strap, battery to motor and battery to frame/body ground connections.

Not if ignition module . Electronic componets when heated up will act just like that . When it dies check spark, fuel pressure right away an find out what quit . Test don't guess . Videos on youtube on testing GM ignition system. Which engine does yours have ? Had option of two different ones . 3.4 an 3.8L . Ignition module or cranhshaft position sensor could be the cause .
Three dual tower ignition coils are mounted to the ICM, and are serviced individually. The ICM performs the following functions:
• The ICM supplies a power and low reference circuit to the CMP and CKP sensors.
• The ICM determines the correct direction of the crankshaft rotation, and cuts spark and fuel delivery to prevent damage from backfiring if reverse rotation is detected.
• The ICM determines the correct coil triggering sequence, based on how many 18 X ON-OFF pulses occur during a sync pulse. This coil sequencing occurs at start-up, and is remembered by the ICM. After the engine is running, the ICM will continue to trigger the coils without the CKP sync pulse.
• The ICM inputs 18 X and 3 X reference signals to the PCM.
• The 3 X reference signal is also known as the low resolution engine speed signal. This signal is generated by the ICM using an internal divide-by-six circuit. This circuit divides the 18 X signal pulses by 6. This divider circuit will not begin operation without a sync pulse present at start-up, and without 18 X and 3 X reference signals no fuel injection will occur.

I have a 1995 Olds Aurora. It started and ran fine until I replaced the coil packs. Once I replaced the coil packs It immediately would not spark. I put the old ones back on and still no spark. I then...

Why did you change the coils ??????? Do you know how to test electrical circuits with a DVOM - digital volt ohm meter ? Check for B+ voltage at the ignition module ,connector 2 pin C this is a pink wire . Check for a good ground at connector 2 pin A ,black with white stripe . Plus watch as many videos from this guy as you can on GM igntion systems .Your vehicle has two crankshaft position sensors .

I have a 92 corsica 3.1 all of a sudden it wont start. im getting a small spark from 4 and 6 but nothing from 2. any ideas? abot 2 years ago had to chg coil packs and icm. could either have fouled out...

if the battery voltage is not at full voltage this can cause a poor spark.this needs to be checked first as without proper voltage all testing is not accurate,i`m guessing that you have no check engine light on the dash when it was running so this eliminates a possible code set in the computer.if you check the connections at the icm and make sure they are clean as they get alot of debris thrown at them aver the year because of were they are mounted.were these new components when you changed them or used, this is a common problem with this don`t say if cylinders 1-3-5 have any spark of any sounds like you may have a bad icm as you say cylinders 4-6 are weak spark and nothing from #2.without checking this out it sounds as the crank and cam sensor is working or you wouldn`t have any kind of spark.this narrows it down to icm or poor coils however it is very rare that 3 coils would all of a sudden go bad, again this indicates a bad icm

I have a 1990 s10 blazer 4x4 been sitting for 10 years i have changed full pump, fuel filter , plugs, wires, and coil i have fuel and spark what else should i do to get it to crank it turns over and sounds...

Replace the ICM (Ignition Control Module) or have it tested at Auto Zone, they test free of charge. The other thing also is you may want to give it a Seafoam treatment to clean out any dirt and varnish from your fuel line and injectors. You can buy a Seafoam at Auto Zone also and your going to need 2 cans to get the job done, just follow the instructions.

Thank you for using fixya and good luck.

did you check the ICM (ignition control module) that's what the coil pack sits on. Inspect if for wire damage and you can remove the ICM and have it tested at Auto Zone or Parts Source free of charge.

Chevy 350 no spark I have changed the coil, cap, and rotor. Still no spark. I also changed the plugs and wires about 3 months ago

Check the distributor module (ICM), it may have gone bad and needs to be replaced. It's around $40.00 and it's under the rotor in the distributor assembly. Check the red lead wire to the HEI for voltage, there should be 12 volts. It common for the ICM to fail on the HEI system and if you go to Auto Zone, they can give you the step by step instructions to replace the ICM. Good luck and keep me posted, be glad to help.
