Most parts stores will sell you a code reader and it is just that .. it will give you the code and a brief and most times poor description . To use OBD2 to diagnose a problem you will need a scanner capable of live data stream which are expensive and not worth the money to the average person.

For the handyman , a code reader will do fine for being able to tell what the code number is if you have access to the repair information.

Use Google to look up your codes & solutions

OBD PO404

You need to study OBD2 Systems & learn to diagnose
issues & not install ANY parts until you find a problem
& component test it,that includes plug wires

Engine light on in 09 hyundia elantra after changing 02 sensor

That is because the check light indicated on OBD2
System Fault

You replaced a part based on the code

The codes are used to diagnose the system that set
the code & then component test

You apparently didn't diagnose the real cause of the
possible problem

The sensor may have been just doing it's job

When you come here either give use the codes or
just Google them to learn the ins & outs

Check engine light came on in 98 cavalier. added that mister marvel stuff to gas tank. light went off....its back on now...what can i do to fix this

Check for codes, that is always the first thing
you do when any light comes on your dash

Never need to add to or top off any fluids

There is no genie in a bottle that fixes cars

The codes are used to diagnose the system with a fault

I suggest you use the internet to learn OBD2 Systems

What does it mean when the check engine soon warning light comes one?

If you read your owners manual you will learn something,
not much, but have to start somewhere

Check lights have been on all vehicles since 1983, some
31 years. SO--I don't know what to tell you, when you say
you don't know what it means

You can speculate all you want, what you need to do is check for
codes, again what most people have done for 3 decades, look
them up & then have a repair shop diagnose the code fault

You provided no vehicle year,engine,OBD2 Codes

Have no vehicle history on maintenance,or if someone
just put the problem in there

Arrows pointing down is low coolant. If you can't read the code because it displays, "communication error", you have a blown fuse. Your ALDL may be tied in with the auxiliary plug. Look for a blown fuse and replace it.

My check engine light and a double end wrench symbol. what is this

MIL Lamp (wrench) --- Malfunction Indicator Lamp

They have been on all vehicles since 1980 some 31 years

OBD1 1980 thru 1995

OBD2 1986 thru 2011

(On Board Diagnostic System) Study that on internet
& read your owners manual

No Manual --Helm.Com

Now you check for codes, have the issues diagnosed &
then repaired

Three step process, thirty years now, nothing new

My air bag light came on this morning how do I reset it?

Don't think you understand the technology that has
been on all vehicles for 30 years, that being OBD1
starting in 1980 & the current OBD2 96 thru 2011

Any time you get any check lights etc on your dash your
vehicle has detected a problem

Don't you find that the light is not normal & wouldn't
you want to know why

Read your owners manual

Your car has a problem that you need to first check for
codes,have diagnosed & then repaired

Those are the 3 steps you will be taking at least once
a year for the rest of your life & it will be expensive, if you
don't learn the technology & work on your on car

You have a malfunction in the SRS System (air bag)
& they may even be turned off in case you needed them

You NEVER need a dealer for ANY repairs, but you do
need to go to a local repair shop within a couple of days
ANYTIME you get ANY check lamp,MIL Lamp,Wrench,
etc on your dash.

A car is not like Windows 7 at all

It does not self diagnose & clearing the lights & codes only
prevent further diagnoses

There are NO computers used by your mechanic to do anything

ALL Scan Tools etc are data processors
Your car has no computer as you know them

There are also no tune-ups for 30 years, that is an
industry term for spark plugs & mostly a waste of
your money on other items
