Re: PO551 fault code on PT cruiser...power steering??
Power steering pressure switch should be replaced. This error P0551 appearing and engine sign lights up because this switch helping to maintain engine rpm during turning steering wheel on low speed (during parking process for example). Some cars was manufactured without this switch. Driving is ok if you have this error, but prepare yourself to fix this problem soon. (: Good luck!

code po551 refers to power steering pressure(PSP) sensor/ switch--range /performance problem===causes --PS system--PSP sensor/switch
Have the power steering pressure checked as it may be a pump problem or just the sensor/switch.. Check the reservoir level as it may be lacking fluid.
Error code P0551 which reads in the Chrysler PT Cruiser computer codes as "The power steering switch may not be working".For this error the switch has to be replaced. The power steeringpressureswitchis on the steering rack. It senses the pressure in the
system, and when the pressure goes high from turning the steering wheel, if you
are at idle it will raise the idle speed slightly. you may not even notice that
it's not doing it anymore. This isn't an uncommon problem on these cars. It's
very likely that you'll need a new switch. It threads into the back of the
steering rack and has a two wire electrical connector.-------------This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.
I have no experience doing this conversion myself but that code should have nothing to do with the engine itself. The code indicates that you're having a problem with the power steering pressure switch (psps). I suspect that the connector to it got left of or damaged during the engine swap. The psps senses when the steering system is loaded, such as tight parking turns and then tells the computer to increase idle speed so that the engine does not stall. If the wire to the switch is left off or damaged, the code will set. You'll need to inspect the high pressure line coming from the power steering pump. Somewhere between the pump and the steering rack you will see a small oil pressure switch with a couple of wires going to it...or at least it should, the connector might be hanging somewhere near it.
Code po551 is for the steering sensor. It senses steering pressure and bumps up the idle a little to compensate for lower pressure. The switch number is 5269625 and costs approx 35.00. It is threaded into the back of the steering rack and is accessible from underneath the car. Unplug the electrical connector from the switch, clean with electrical cleaner, remove and replace switch, plug in electrical connector. Disconnect the battery for a few minutes to reset the check engine light. Hope this helps.
