Question about BMW 318

1 Answer

Hi, I have a weird problem that suddenly developed. 1996 e36 318i BMW (manual) 250,000 kms (not sure if the engine has been reconditioned in the past), should be the M43 engine. The exhaust manifold gasket blew and the car stopped idling. The gasket has been replaced but the idle problem remains. The car starts fine but won't idle and it does not work under light acceleration almost like fuel is not getting through. To drive I have to push down on the accelerator pedal and keep the revs above 2500 otherwise the whole car jerks. At standstill I have to rev the car to keep iot from stalling.. Any ideas? The inverter on the alternator was also replaced when this all started and the engine has blow-by so the breather pipe is disconnected and I have to have the rings redone however I have been driving around with the breather pipe off for 2 months already without any engine problems.

The main issue was a very dirty MOS and when the guys fixed the alternator they left off a smaller pipe under the air inflow assembly.

While I was at it I also cleaned out some sand from the airfilter box and I cleaned the throttle box.

Thanks for the help, the car idles and drives properly again.

This is a common problem on car with un-meter enter into the intake manifold.

Please clean your intake manifold with CRC Mass Air Fold cleaner.

Hi, I have a weird - 5535fd6.jpg
Let dry for 2 hours and inspect any crack on tubing and plastic covers.

ANY un-meter air enter after the Mass Air Flow sensor will offset the 14.7:1 air/fuel mixture ratio.

The O2 sensors will catch this in rush of air and report to the computer (ECU).

The ECU will richen the fuel and cause the car to stall or generate error codes.

STOP driving your car until you are able to catch this small air leak on the air inlet tube after the MAF or intake gasket.

Fail to repair this will cause you more money on spark plug and spark plug fragment damage (LOWER COMPRESSION)

Need to overall my bmw e36 engin.how much will it cost me?

prices vary according to the quality of workmanship, genuine or after market parts and how far you want the overhaul to go

To get a good idea , go to a bmw spares department and price a full motor and use that as a datum price .some shops like bmw, volvo etc have factory reconditioned engines at competitive prices
then go to engine reconditioning shops and get quotes as there will be differences between shops
from all that information you will have some idea of what you want to do

Bmw 320d problems

Diesels can use lots of fuel mainly when the injectors and/ or pump need reconditioning. When the air filter is dirty and needs changing. When the accelerator doesnt' go to full throttle on the stop setting but has clearance to the stop screw. When the engine oil is too heavy from not being changed often enough. When the fuel filters need changing

Timing chain How often does the timing chain need to be replaced???  2002 BMW 745i 118,000 kms

I don't think they have a service interval. They usually last a long time. I would guess 150,000 to 175,000 miles. Or about 250,000 km

Accelerate Problem BMW 1992 318i

a bad camshaft position sensor or a vacuum leak. Most likely sensor. Is your check engine light on? you can test sensors with an ohmmeter to determine if a sensor is good or not. It wouldn't be bad to check and make sure your coil packs aren't bad by checking each plug for spark. You can lay one plug and wire at a time one engine so end probe of plug is fairly next to metal. Have someone crank while you watch for spark.

I DONT KNOW THE CODES OFF THE TOP OF MY HEAD BUT IT SOUNDS LIKE YOU HAVE AN EXHAUST LEAK AT THE FRONT OF THE EXHAUST SYSTEM AND THE OXYGEN SENSORS DONT KNOW ABOUT IT .IN TURN THEY ARE ADDING MORE FUEL TO YOUR SYSTEM BECAUSE TOO MUCH AIR IS GETTING SUCKED IN TO THE EXHAUST.
