Question about 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee

1 Answer

Interior/Exterior lights dim, ABS light flickers on, Odometer flickers. Also, voltage either spikes up to 15/16V for a second or drops and hovers around 9V (causing lights to dim and the ABS/odometer to flicker) then pops back to normal range. I've changed the battery once and it helped for a few days. UPDATE: I recently changed the alternator and the voltage drop/spikes are milder in range, and the 9V hovering is gone. The lights (interior and exterior) flicker MORE often now. Along with the flicker the Brake and ABS light come on and stay on every so often.

Short in battery cell or bad connections or the alternator is going bad. Have it fixed before you fry the computers in your car.

Why do I have an intermittent problem with ABS and power steering lights?

Bad or loose intermittent wire connections to and from sensors. Some unauthorised mechanic has been working on the car? Take it back and talk to the service manager, or the shop owner.

Why are my interior and exterior light flickering and diming .

Most likely the earth connection. Check all earth wiring, first and foremost check if the lights are powered from the same fuse! If that is the case remove the fuse, clean all contacts and replace with a new fuse! Happy motoring.

I have a 2000 pontiac grand prix gtp that i just had a new altenator put on because i was told there was a short that was causing my lights interior and exterior to flicker now that the new one is in when...

This means you have an electrical problem ! An without doing some testing with a volt meter an looking at a wiring diagram to isolate the circuits from the ones with the problem i would be guessing , just like anyone else on here would be doing . Do you know how to do automotive electrical testing ? How to read an use a wiring diagram .It is true a bad diode inside the alternator can cause excess AC voltage ripple , causing lights to flicker ! If i were to guess i'd say there is a ground issue and voltage is back feeding through one of the lamp circuits . But also looking at a wiring diagram i see the brake light switch feeds B+ voltage to the center high mount stop lamps and to and through the turn signal switch .to the right and left lower stop lamps . Pontiac grand Am's had multifuction switch problems that caused similiar problems . Check the grounds first , do you know what a body ground is .

Why do the lights flicker when trying to turn over the engine?

The battery is low on charge. Either the battery is failing or your alternator is not putting out enough charge or the starter motor is drawing too much electricity. If you have a volt ohm meter you can check the all of these conditions. Simply by connecting the VOM to the battery. Your battery should have a static charge of about 12.5 volts. When you try to start the engine the voltage on the meter should not drop below 10 volts..If you have the engine running the voltage should come up to about 14.4 volts within 2 minutes. If it doesn't come above 14 volts there is a problem with your alternator.

I have a 2005 chevrolet silverado my dashlights and headlights are strobing how do i fix them?

Are you having problems with headlights or interior lights flickering or dimming for no apparent reason? You are not alone! Many other consumers have reported experiencing the exact same problem. The problem is seen in many different GM makes and models including, but not limited to: Chevy Suburban, Tahoe, Silverado, Corvette, Camaro, Firebird and Malibu's and Pontiac Aztek's.
Why Are My Headlights Flickering? The headlight flickering or dimming may be caused by a intermittent low voltage output from engine vibrations. When this occurs, a voltage spike causes the voltage regulator to reset. During the reset, generator output drops to almost zero. This is a known issue with GM cars and the correction involves replacing the alternator. Would recommend seeing dealer for proper alternator application to resolve concerns. Probably has a superceded part number to indicate internal changes.

Flickering Headlights and Dim interior lights

Definately an electrical problem....first off, check the battery and alternator connections to make sure they are tight. The problem has to be before the fuse box because the headlights and interior lights are on different fuses. It sounds to me like a loose wire, corroded battery terminals, or an alternator that is going bad. An alternator is a relatively easy and cheap fix. They cost about $100 and require removing a few wires, 3 bolts, and the serpentine belt.
