Question about Toyota Celica

1 Answer

Dead alternator I drive a 1981 Toyota Celica GT with the famous 22R carbureted engine, and about 410,000 miles on it;I have just burned through another alternator, the last of many. What would be the best brand of alternator to get to replace it with for maximum longevity? Most of my short-lived alts have been AutoZone's ''Duralast'' brand; are there any that last longer?

my most recent alts have lasted 6 months to 2 years (don't know what makes the difference), and they are all free under their lifetime warranty, but the warranty doesn't cover the labor, time, or annoyance of having to replace it myself (or the batteries that invariably get destroyed because I can't stop driving immediately). I am of the opinion that this car (having traveled 400,000 miles already with only minimal maintenance) will probably outlast most regularly replaced parts. (I would suggest that you Google the 1 million mile Volvo reportedly approaching 3 million mi.) VEHICLE LIFETIME ASIDE what type of alternators work best, or last longest in actual use?

Are you buying new or remanufater ,how long do they last ,are they covered under warranty ? im sure there are some brands that advertise longer life or have a longer warrenty but with 410,000 miles i dont think your car will last that much longer without something major going out gota think about price vs life expectance you might find a 5year warrenty at 300$ but your car tanks in 1 for example

yor questions are more related to ratings, best your going to get here is opinions . my opinion is based on the fact you keep buying duralast .the cheapy and maybe even remanufactured maybe even the first one you had burned out got sent to be rebuilt and sold back to you .and yes they do have life time warrenties . the next time your at the auto parts store look at them all cheapest to most expensive look at their warrenties. example duralast for 79$ life time replacement vs bosch for 179$ 1year replasment plus laybor and life time replasement. also try toyota dealership to see if you can get original alternater .try paying more for new. good luck p.s.

you can also serf the web just type in alternater and reserch yourself. easer then making a decission at the auto parts counter

I NEED A DIAGRAM ON HOW TO INSTALL A NEW ALTERNATOR BELT ON A 1982 TOYOTA CELICA GT WITH A/C.

Hi, it appears there are other belts in front of the alternator belt. In this case, the other belts have to come off first. There are adjusting mechanisms on each the air pump, compressor, and alternator to loosen and tighten the belts. The power steering belt is adjusted by sliding the idler pulley. Please follow the instructions below and let me know if you have any questions.

Alternator

To adjust the tension of the alternator drive belt on all models, loosen the pivot and mounting bolts on the alternator. Using a wooden hammer handle, a broomstick or your hand, move the alternator one way or the other until the proper tension is achieved.

WARNING Do not use a screwdriver or any other metal device (such as a prybar) as a lever.
Tighten the mounting bolts securely. If a new belt has been installed, recheck the tension after about 200 miles (480 km) of driving.

Air Conditioning Compressor

A/C compressor belt tension can be adjusted by turning the tension adjusting bolt which is located on the compressor tensioner bracket. Turn the bolt clockwise to tighten the belt and counterclockwise to loosen it.

Air Pump

See Figures 12
To adjust the tension of the air pump drive belt, loosen the adjusting lever bolt and the pivot bolt. Move the pump in or out until the desired tension is felt.
The tension should be checked between the air pump and the crankshaft pulley on cars without air conditioning. On cars with A/C, the tension should be checked between the A/C compressor and the crankshaft pulley.

Power Steering Pump

Tension on the power steering belt is adjusted by means of an idler pulley. Turn the adjusting bolt on the idler pulley until the desired tension is felt and then retighten the lockbolt.

Hi, you have the 22R-E engine. This engine was also used in the pick-up and 4-runner. You can read more here:

Check alternator voltage at back of alternator ( big wire ), if you have no less then 13.5 volt's, alternator is ok, check for blown alternator fuse or break at wire from back of alternator to starter then to battery, could be a bad fuse link at starter.

Need to change engines

If you have a 22r carbed then all 22r carbed engines from 1981-1995 will interchange. You may need to use sensor out of your old engine however. The 20r,22r,22re,22ret all have the same mounts and tranny bolt patterns. how ever there are lot of differences. you can swap from a 22r to a 22re but you must also swap the entire vehical wiring harness to do it right. if you have a 3.0L i would keep the same engine. some people have swap to the tacoma 3.6L but that is a expensive swap not exsactly bolt on so to say. If you have a 22re then stay with the 1986-1987 22re because the newer 22re use different computers, electronics ,sensors and more.. Same story with the 22ret. I hoped this helped.

1981 TOYOTA CELICA -VIBRATION

Hi. I will be glad to provide assistance to you, with the hope that I will get a FixYa rating from you for my advice.

My experience leads me to tell you to check the rear driveshaft u-joint. The way that you describe this would be a worn or seized u-joint situation. Get it checked; I'll bet that that is your issue.

Thanks for choosing FixYa for assistance.
