It is removed from under the Jeep and it is on the right side of the engine under the front cylinder. It is nearly directly above the wide frame member and is not easily seen. Look for wires running from the top of the engine down, then follow the wires that "T" off, they go to the sensor. It's up pretty high. Buy the sensor and you will see the flange of which the bolt will be toward the back of the engine. I used a long 3/8" extension with a swivel on the end w/ a metric socket but I don't remember what size. Be carefu.

Hi Paula,

You didn't mention if you changed the plug wires.

You mentioned replacing the camshaft sensor. Have you checked the Crankshaft Position Sensor? Or the Mass Air Flow Sensor (may need cleaning)? Or the Throttle Position Sensor?

No spark on a 1987 jeep cherokee with the 4.0 engine

Could be a lot of different things, but I believe the first thing I'd take a look at is the crankshaft position sensor.

Best bet is to go to your local auto supply parts store and purchase a vehicle specific repair manual. It should provide step-by-step instruction on how to R & R the Crankshaft Position Sensor.

2000 grand jeep cherokee dies while slowing down

Its not unusual for the crankshaft sensor to intermittanly fail. The crank sensors are not real expensive and are not extremely hard to change.
The Crankshaft Position Sensor (CKP) is mounted into the engine block above the starter motor. Engine speed and crankshaft position are provided through the crankshaft position sensor. The sensor generates pulses that are the input sent to the powertrain control module (PCM). The PCM interprets the sensor input to determine the crankshaft position. The PCM then uses this position, along with other inputs, to determine injector sequence and ignition timing. The sensor is a Hall effect device combined with an internal magnet. It is also sensitive to steel within a certain distance from it.
Below is a pic of the sensor location.
Good luck.
