Question about 1983 Chevrolet Impala

1 Answer

My 1983 chevy impala 6cyl, was running and starting fine yesterday. I checked the battery and terminals. I have power to all lights and accessories. Most of the time there is no sound. Other times there is a ticking. I was wondering how to check if it's the ignition switch or distributor... or if there might be something else I should check. Thank You, John

Check the Positive Battery Lead where it connects to the Starter Motor and also where the Negative Eatth Lead connects to the engine. Both most be clean and tight to carry the high currents drawn on starting.

Check to see if the battery has power. If it does maybe the battery terminals need to be cleaned. If the battery terminals are clean, then your ignition switch maybe bad. It is located underneath the dash on the steering column

2003 chevy impala starts anti theft comes onput in gear dies wont do nothing

My impala did same thing and then would not start. I suspected anti theft problem I then had chevy dealer change ignition switch. It fixed problem second time I wasn't going to pay $ 750 for so I bought $40 dollar switch on ebay. It was an easy job following great video on you tube. When I went to start car it would not go. While doing relearn procedure (hook up battery charger before starting procedure) I got very tired of door chime so I found it was coming from left front door speaker. I removed wire to stop chime. When i went back to relearn procedure car started right up. I have a steady security light on but car has run fine for months. If you cruise and heater fan has also stopped working add wire from switched terminal on ignition switch to power feed wire on heater. It fixed both problems on mine.

My 2006 chevy trailblazer 2wd 6cyl wont start. makes clicking noise, then nothing lights/radio etc work but wont start what is it

You got a jump and it ran fine? It's your battery. The lights and radio are much easier for a battery to handle than spinning a car engine. Again, if all you needed was a jump, you have a bad battery.

they are most likely a black color inside and on the posts where they should be a shiny clean
use a wire brush or file to remobe the lead sulphate that is preventing good contact and then make sure that the terminals are tight

Servicing battery charging system. car won't start. 2006 chevy impala.

Check the battery terminals for cleanlyness and tightness.
Check the voltage when stopped, it should be 12 volts.
Check the voltage with the motor running, it should be 14 volts. If not the alternator is not charging.
If the battery voltage is low then it may need replacing.

"2003 Chevy Impala won't start". Car would not

The alternator is not charging,or the battery wont take a charge. If all accessories work fine when its running after you've boosted it,its likely the battery.

You need to go to Autozone to get your check engine light scanned for a code. It doesn't cost anything. Hopefully, your computer has found your problem. They can tell you why your light is on and tell you what the problem is. This will let you know where to start because they are a few things that can cause your engine to loose power.

It sounds like you have lost the electrical connection between the battery and the car. Without a voltage source, the engine cannot start or run.

First, check the ground connection with a voltmeter. You should have a direct connection between the battery negative terminal to the engine block. Then, look for positive voltage in the main fuse block and at the power post on the starter.

How do I reset my check engine light myself

On most cars you can reset the check engine light by disconnecting the computer from it's power source. Disconnect one of the terminals on your battery. The negative terminal is usually suggested but I've never noticed a difference between the two. When you reconnect it and start it up, the light should be gone until the computer comes across another problem.
