2004 dodge neon srt-4. 2.4l turbo. Have replaced the ECT sensor and still getting code. Car will drive fine and it seems as if after it has warmed up the temperature drops and goes back to normal intermittently. Will go from 195-180 (fluctuates in that range) (even lower at times) while the CEL is off, after it fluctuates after a while, the CEL will come on and the temperature will show 65496 on my digital gauge. Also when this happens, the needle on the temperature gauge will drop to the bottom. Have had this problem for a really long time, please help thank you

    code is
P0118 - Engine Coolant Temperature Circuit High Input

basically you are looking at one of two problems
1.) most likely... short to power on the ECT circuit
    2.) Defective computer

the vehicle was in a shop for two weeks and had the wires traced, i was told the wiring is fine. Is there a way to check the wiring on my own? Would a coolant flush help, I have seen it help a few different occasions online. Also, how would I go about diagnosing a bad ecm

    my concerns are...
1.) if the vehicle was in the shop for two weeks.... did they confirm the concern?
2.) tracing a wire does nothing except ensure that the wires look ok and nothing is cut or chaffed

for you to test the wires will require a load source light a headlamp, a voltmeter and a little time, effort and skill...you have to remove all the suspect wires and apply a load while you volt drop the circuits

as for a coolant flush... I have not seen this to resolve the concern but its worth a try if its due anyways

for the ECM you need a scan tool and a "breakout" box
the breakout box allows you to measure actual input voltages while monitoring actual "perceived" voltages on the scan tool

at the dealer its easy to test an ECM... they just swap them with a known good
buying a used one won't help you because you do not know if it is "good"

based on the scope of the concern and limited time and/or tools... do a coolant flush and ensure the condenser and radiator are free and clear from road debris like bugs and bags

Does my 2002 Cadillac Seville SLS have a cooling fan switch, and, if so, where is it located?

Cooling fan switch ?????? Has a engine coolant temp. sensor , That inputs info to the PCM/ECM - engine computer ! The PCM / ECM interpits the voltage signal from software programmed into it as to what temp . of the coolant is . When the engine coolant temp. reaches
The PCM commands the low-speed fans ON under the following conditions:
• The engine coolant temperature exceeds approximately 106°C (223°F).
• The transmission fluid temperature exceeds 150°C (302°F).
• The A/C pressure reaches 199 psi (1372 kPa).
The cooling fans will switch from low to OFF when the coolant temperature drops below 102°C (216°F).
The PCM commands the high-speed fans ON under the following conditions:
• The engine coolant temperature reaches 112°C (234°F).
• The transmission fluid temperature is more than 151°C (304°F).
• The A/C pressure reaches 260 psi (1792 kPa).
• Certain DTCs are set.
The cooling fans will switch from high to low, except when DTCs are set, when the coolant temperature drops below 106°C (223°F).

The PCM turns on the cooling fans by energizing three different relay's .

Is it normal on 94 grand prix 3.1 for the temp. gauge to NOT stay at a steady temp. all the time? mine seems to go up to 210 at a stop light then go back down after i start rollin again, i just had air...

Have you checked your cooling fan to see if it is working propely? Let the car idle and get warm and listen for the fan to kick in (if they are electric) or just watch to see if the fan starts to spin faster if it is the old school type with a clutch. Have you replaced the thermostat? A bad one will let the temp rise since it opens too late and then the temp will drop off. But it won't due this only at a light and it will do it infrequently.

When engine get hot, engine stop, when engine temperature drop, motor start

I just fixed this problem o my car, and it costs no more than $20 to fix... replace your thermostat. What happens is that the car reaches a certain temperature and the coolant flows to keep the car cool, well if the thermostat doesn't open at that certain temperature, the car runs how and eventually turns off; causing you to wait until it cools down to be able to turn it back on. The fix took no more than 15 minutes and the car runs great now.

No my alero is overheating. I have replaced the thermostat and waterpump and put a new cap on reservior and im losing coolant out the overflow

YOU NEED BLEED AIR OUT THE COOLING SYSTEM.WAIT TO ENGINE COOL DOWN.YOUR VECHICLE YOU HAVE TO POUR COOLANT IN THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STAY AT THE FULL COLD MARK.THEN START ENGINE LET IT IDLE A FEW MINUTES WATCH COOLANT IN THE OVERFLOW JUG WHEN IT DROPS ADD MORE COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STAY AT FULL COLD MARK.WHEN COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING IN OVERFLOW JUG.SCREW RADIATOR CAP BACK ON OVERFLOW JUG WATCH ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE AS COOLANT TEMPERATURE START CLIMBING TURN OFF ENGINE LET IT SET A WHILE KEEP FROM GETTING SCALDED.TAKE LARGE RAG PLACE OVER COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG CAP SLOWLY OPEN RADIATOR CAP A LITTLE AT A TIME UNTIL PRESSURE RELEASE.REMOVE OVER FLOW JUG CAP.ADD MORE COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL AT THE FUL COLD MARK ON THE OVERFLOW JUG.THEN SCREW CAP BACK ON THE OVERFLOW JUG.START ENGINE LET IT IDLE AGAIN WATCH ENGINE COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE WHEN TEMPERATURE GAUGE START CLIMBING.TURN OFF ENGINE WAIT A WHILE.CHECK COOLANT LEVEL IN THE OVER FLOW JUG.DO THIS PROCEDURE UNTIL THE COOLANT LEVEL IN THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG STOP DROPPING AND STAY AT FULL COLD MARK,WHEN THE TOP RADIATOR HOSE GET HOT THERMOSTAT OPENING AIR IS OUT THE COOLANT SYSTEM. WHEN ENGINE COOLS DOWN.CHECK COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG COOLANT MUST BE IN THE COOLANT OVER FLOW JUG AT THE FULL COLD MARK WHEN ENGINE COLD. DONT .DONT OVERFILL COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG.KEEP COOLANT IN THE OVERFLOW JUG IF YOU LET COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG RUN DRY AIR WILL BE DRAW IN COOLANT SYSTEM CAUSE ENGINE TO OVERHEAT.

I replaced my radiator on my 2004 with a 2.2 and it seems like the thermostat is not opening. It can not get the air out. It seem to just to over heat and push the coolant out. Randy

REPLACE THERMOSTAT IF TOP COOLANT COOLANT HOSE GOING TO RADIATOR IS HOT TO TOUCH THERMOSTAT OPEN. TO BLEED COOLANT SYSTEM FIRST YOU NEED TO ADD COOLANT TO THE COOLANT OVER FLOW JUG UNTIL COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING AND STAY AT FULL COLD MARK.WAIT 3 MINUTES IF COOLANT DROPS ADD MORE COOLANT UNTIL COOLANT STAY AT FULL COLD MARK.WITH RADIATOR OVER CAP OFF CRANK ENGINE FOR MINUTE WATCH COOLANT LEVEL AT OVERFLOW JUG.IF COOLANT DROPS ADD MORE COOLANT IN THE OVERFLOW JUG.WHEN COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING IN OVERFLOW JUG.SCREW BACK ON THE RADIATOR CAP TO OVERFLOW JUG.WHILE ENGINE IDLING WATCH TEMPERATURE GAUGE WHEN TEMPERATURE START CLIMBING TURN OFF ENGINE WAIT A WHILE KEEP FROM GETTING SCALDED.WHEN COOLANT COOL DOWN SOME. PLACE A LARGE RAG OVER THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG OPEN CAP LITTLE AT A TIME UNTIL PRESSURE RELEASED, THEN REMOVE CAP ADD MORE COOLANT IN THE OVERFLOW JUG TO THE FULL COLD MARK.THEN REPEAT THE PROCESS SCREW BACK ON THE COOLANT OVERFLOW RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.THEN START ENGINE WATCH TEMPERATURE GAUGE WATCH COOLANT TEMPERATURE GAUGE WHEN COOLANT TEMPERATURE START RISING TURN OFF ENGINE AGAIN WAIT UNTIL ENGINE COOL DOWN ENOUGH TO KEEP FROM GETTING SCALDED TAKE PLACE LARGE RAG OVER RADIATOR CAP WHICH IS THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG CAP OPEN CAP LITTLE AT A TIME UNTIL PRESSURE RELEASED ADD COOLANT UNTIL AT FULL COLD MARK. WHEN YOUR COOLANT LEVEL STOP DROPPING.AND TOP RADIATOR HOSE VERY HOT THERMOSTAT OPEN AND AIR IS OUT THE COOLANT SYSTEM. MAKE SURE YOUR COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG HAS COOLANT IN IT,WHEN ENGINE COOL DOWN CHECK COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG KEEP COOLANT LEVEL AT FULL COLD MARK.BECAUSE IF OVERFLOW JUG IS EMPTY THATS A SIGN RADIATOR COOLANT LEVEL LOW.WHEN OVERFLOW JUG EMPTY IT WILL ALLOW AIR GET IN THE COOLANT SYSTEM AND CAUSE CAR TO OVERHEAT.WHEN REPLACING THERMOSTAT ALSO REPLACE THE RADIATOR CAP ON THE COOLANT OVERFLOW JUG.

Am geting a code with this number p0118

OBD Code P0118refers to,
The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor is a thermistor screwed into a coolant passage in the cylinder head. Sensor resistance is high when coolant temperature is low and resistance drops when coolant temperature increases. The powertrain control module (PCM) provides a 5 volt reference and a ground to the sensor. The PCM monitors voltage drop to determine coolant temperature. If the ECT reads less than freezing temp. when engine has been running for more than a few minutes, the PCM determines a circuit fault and sets this code. Or if the PCM determines the sensor resistance is out of specs, this code is set.
I hope this helps.

My cadillac deville(2001)runs smooth, but it runs hot.what is the problem?

Insufficient or weak coolant, bad thermostat (out of range), cooling fan not running or kicking into 2nd phase with A/C on, bad temperature sensor, bad temperature sending unit.(false guage reading).
Start by checking your coolant level and color (nice and green or orange? not rusty looking?) if rusty looking, flush coolant system and refill with recommended coolant type of 50/50 mixture.

Check specific gravity of coolant to see if the mixture is weak.

Verify cooling fan is kicking on after engine reaches operating temperature with engine idling.

Replace thermostat.

Measure resistance of temperature sensor. (should slowly raise as engine heats up)

Measure voltage at sending unit. (should slowly raise as engine heats up)

One of those should solve it, I always lean toward weak coolant and bad thermostat. I have seen bad water pumps do that too.

How do I bleed the cooling system for a 2002 Chevy Trailblazer. It is a 6 cylinder.

The simplest way is to raise the front of the vehicle to where the radiator is higher than the engine. Start the engine, turn the heater controls to maximum temperature and remove the radiator cap. Let the engine run, when the thermostat opens up, the coolant level in the radiator tank will drop as the coolant is being drawn into the engine. Pour antifreeze into the radiator until it is full. Let the coolant level drop again, and repeat the filling process. Continue to do this until the coolant level no longer drops. All the air has been displaced with liquid. Put the radiator cap back on and lower the vehicle. A tip: add the coolant slowly so as not to cause the thermostat to close. If it closes you will lose some coolant from overflow. Just wait for it to open up again and refill.

My antifreeze resevior is completely filled but my temp guage raises above the mid point then drops below the mid point then raises then drops. I started the car and noticed that only one of the two fans,...

The thermostat may be wearing out. A thermostat controls the engine temperature to keep it at a consistent temperature, The other fan will probably turn on if you turn on your Air Conditioner.

temp control for cooloing system or heater sysem?

ECT - Engine Coolant Temperature Sensor

The engine coolant temperature (ECT) sensor (Figure 27) is a thermistor device in which resistance changes with temperature. The electrical resistance of a thermistor decreases as the temperature increases, and increases as the temperature decreases. The varying resistance affects the voltage drop across the sensor terminals and provides electrical signals to the PCM corresponding to temperature.
Thermistor-type sensors are considered passive sensors. A passive sensor is connected to a voltage divider network so that varying the resistance of the passive sensor causes a variation in total current flow.
Voltage that is dropped across a fixed resistor in a series with the sensor resistor determines the voltage signal at the PCM. This voltage signal is equal to the reference voltage minus the voltage drop across the fixed resistor.
The ECT measures the temperature of the engine coolant. The sensor is threaded into an engine coolant passage. The ECT sensor is similar in construction to the IAT sensor.
