It's possible that the fuel level sending unit inside the tank is going bad. This sender constantly moves up and down a little as the fuel sloshes around in the tank and it can actually wear a bit and give a faulty "empty" reading to the dash unit. Some of the senders are replaceable and some come only as a part of the fuel pump module [all inside the tank]. If you have close to 100k on this for miles and it's determined that the sender is bad [and replaceable seperately] I would suggest replacing the entire pump module anyway as I see a lot of pumps fail at the 125k mark and you don't want to have to do do this job twice. If it's not serviced seperately then you'll have to replace the entire unit anyway. I rarely see a problem with the dash that will cause what you are seeing, it's almost always the sender. Good luck and hope this helps a bit!

The sending unit in the tank may be bad, or wiring to the sending unit is open or shorted.

Hello.... Its possible you have a bad Fuel Gauge Sending Unit. This item is located on the fuel pump itself. So you would need to have your fuel pump replaced in order to fix the problem.

This also can be caused by a bad connector or loose ground wire going to/from the sender.

Good Luck.....

Sounds like a bad sending unit. Is the check engine light on? If it is then most likely you have a bad sending unit.

Common problem on the 03-06 Trailblazer instrument clusters for the fuel gauge to go out. It's usually caused by one of two main problems, either the stepper motor on the cluster's circuit board is going out or the sending unit on the fuel pump is going out. Check out this blog post about the problem - Trailblazer fuel gauge problems

Fuel gauge keeps going to empty and warning light

in side the tank on the side of the pump there is what thy call a sender not to be confused with the sending unit. The sender is atached to the float and tells the gauge how much fuel you have.

2006 Chevy Trailblazer fuel gauge stays on empty

Could be a
1. Fuse - not likely, I'd expect other instrument panel problems.
2. Broken wire from fuel gauge
3. Bad fuel sender in fuel tank. Normally requires dropping the tank.

Vehicle is not that old, would think it is still under warranty?

Ajkill is right. I had the same problem with the fuel light always being on and the guage read empty no matter how much fuel is in the tank. I had to have the fuel level sensor in the tank replaced. This is something that they have to drop the tank for. It was about $400 with the part and labor at the dealership.
