Your camshaft is a half round out. turn the crank till it is at top dead center then take your chain off and turn the camshaft a half roud to line up with crank. then put back together and start

Set timing belt light on a quantum 2.5 diesel

Simply line-up the two timing marks, mount the belt, and try starting the vehicle. If the vehicle fails to start or backfires, remove the belt and rotate the cam sprocket ONE FULL TURN, then re-mount the belt. MAKE SURE THAT YOU ARE NOT ONE TOOTH OFF ONCE YOU MOUNT THE TIMING BELT (THE MARKS SHOULD STILL MEET EXACTLY).

I have a 1999 plymouth breeze and replaced water pump and timing belt due to pump locked up and all the teeth gone off belt now. 2.0 SOHC that after setting belt and timing correctly the car wont start...

In general, backfiring indicates the cam, crank and ignition are out of time or out of phase. The timing marks on the crank and cam just line up the timing of the cam and crank. The alignment of the spark with them has to be phased at the right time too. Check the manual for how to set the distributor timing after an engine repair

94 bonneville changed fuel pump starts backfires and dies

Well, since it won't run, you cant check timing with a light. You could try static timing: Bring #1 piston to TDC by mark on scale by crank pulley. Take upper timing chain cover off. Cam pulley should have a mark or circle or dot that lines up with mark on bloick. (Need to make sure you are on compression stroke, not exhaust stroke of piston. How? Best way is pull spark plug and hold finger or thumb over plug hole. As you turn crank (clockwise) with a socket approaching the TDC mark, you will feel pressure build on your finger if you are on compression stroke. Could also have someone bump starter a little at a time, you can feel pressure build on your finger as piston approaches TDC. When it's close, use socket to line up crank pulley with mark.) Now check cam pulley for those timing marks. Valve timing off is often cause of backfires. So is too much gas, but first I would make sure timing is right.

How to adjust engine timing with new timing belt installed.

If you installed the timing belt correctly, you won't need to adjust the timing. If your timing is incorrect after doing the belt, you'll need to remove the belt again and install it with the cam and crank marks lined up properly.

I fitted a timing belt to a 02 fiat punto and adjusted the marks on the crank and cam inline with the spec in the manual the car wont start and is backfiring through the carb any ideas

Good evening, I'm sorry to hear you're having problems however it is nothing that cannor be recovered from. You either have your timing 180 degrees off or your marks moved. A good hint is when you finish your installation give the belt a few rotations until your marks line up again that way you know everything is good. I hope this helps, and if you have anymore questions please feel free to ask.

Got the car in pieces and was told the timing belt was replaced and all that was needed was to have all the accesories reinstalled. reinstalled the pieces that were with the car and got a no start...

with the nimber one cylinder @ tdc on compression stroke and all timing marks lined up dist. installed with rotor button pointing towards #1 you should be okay this is not an interference engine meaning if timing is not lined up properly the pistons will not contact valves causing damage

2000 Daewoo. Lanos won't start after lining up timing marks

did you turn over any gears while belt was off to align timming marks?
if so did you encounter a resistance and forced the gear over with a bit more than normal force?
if so you could have bent valves which will cause back fire on start up run and dies then wont start again seen a few apprentices get caught by this from forgetting to align marks up before removal of belt or on assembly of head to block. then realising marks are out try to align and have bent valves.(there is a way to do this safely)
check compressions if very low in a couple or all cylinders valves are bent.

My 1994 tracer won't start

Hi there,

Have a few questions.
You said you had fire. Is this true on all cylinders?

Is there any backfiring?

Pull the distributor cap and have someone crank it for you.
Is the rotor spinning?

Pull the plug on cylinder 1. Stuff a rag in the hole. Crank slowly until the rag pops out. The engine should be on or very close to Top Dead Center.
Which plug wire is the rotor facing (distibutor)?

I have my suspicions.
Get back to me with the results to confirm and proceed.
Mike
