Question about Kia Sportage LX

2 Answers

I have a 2001 Kia Sportage, 4 cylinder with A/C. Occasionally the check engine light will come on for a period of time then go off. The engine also runs rough upon initial start up until it warms to full temp. I had the computer scanned and its coming back with a number 2 cylinder misfire. I have in the last 3 months replaced both the plug wire (2 of them) and the spark plugs, with platinum plugs. All with lifetime warantee's. The engine runs significantly better in warm weather and when the engine is warm. Do these symptoms point to a faulty coil or fuel injector?

I'm assuming that you have checked the connections from the coil to the spark plug and all are in good order, no play.
If it would have been the coil the problem would have been worse with the engine hot, not the other way around.
The only thing that would generate a misfire on a single cylinder , only when the engine is cold and when the ignition is working is a partially clogged injector - it can't provide the increased flow of fuel needed.
Try using an injector additive first, then try to clean it manually. If neither works you will have to replace it.

Hi Scott. Sounds like a faulty injector. Go to any auto parts store and get a bottle of a fuel additive called seafoam. Pour it into the tank and drive. After a few miles it will clear this annoyance up for you. J.

Got a cutting torch and welder ... you can put in anything you want, so long as the bolt holes line up. Good luck getting it through inspection if you are in the USA.

Back pressure on kia sportage 2001,blows out of radiater any clues, thought might be head but its ok..

Must be a water port in the head that burned or coroded through to one of the cylinders. See all 4 plugs. take it out and if one of them is wet that is the cylinder with the problem. Enjoy Willem SA

Losing brake fluid(2001 kia sportage)

Check the rear wheel cylinders if you have drum brakes on the rear. Check the master cylinder cap to be sure it's on right & snug. Use D.O.T. 3 fluid, not synthetic. If you're losing fluid there's a reason. Check the front brake pads & slides for the calipers, could be frozen with rust & eating up the pads. Fluid would seem low if the pads are shot.

2000 kia sportage engine wont start when hot it cranks and when it bucks the starter it will start

sounds **** it jumped timing bad belt dont start it cause you run the risk of smashing a valve while it is out of time this is my thought
  1. Apply the parking brake.
  2. Warm up the engine to normal operating temperature.
  3. Turn off all electrical loads.
  4. Connect a tachometer and verify idle speed is between 750-850 RPM.
  5. Connect a timing light to number one cylinder.
  6. Verify the timing marks on the crankshaft pulley and the timing mark on the timing belt cover are aligned at 4°BTDC.

Kia problem

You should get the codes checked and start from there. My Kia Sportage was also backfiring and running rough, after checking the codes. It had misfires on two cylinders. I did a tune up and had to replace one of the ignition coils. Now it runs great!
