SOURCE: CODES,P0442,P0455,P0456,P1684

Yes, the P1684 on the Chrysler line does not indicate a fault. My sebring had codes p0442 and p0456 both indicating very small evep leaks. When I did the 3 time switch on of the ignition, the odometer readout gave me the p1684 first and then the other two. The scanner at the garage only indicated two "very small evap leaks" one for the second two codes. Clearly the first is a status indicator such as recent battery disconnect or another non problematic indicator. Wouldn't it be great if these manufacturers at least gave you the information to identify what their dummy lights are telling you so you didn't have to go on faith at the garage?

SOURCE: Jetta 2006 Code P0456

P0456: Evaporative Emission System Leak Detected (small leak)

Using a Multimeter, check the Evaporative Emission (EVAP) Canister Purge Regulator Valve N80 terminals 1 and 2 for resistance. You should get 22.0 to 30.0 Ohms. If not, replace the canister. If you do, you have other problems.

I have a P0456 code on my 2003 Ford Expedition. Where is the vapor purge solenoid or the canister?

The information you are asking for varies depending on how the vehicle is equipped ie. ENGINE SIZE, AUTOMATIC or MANUAL TRANSMISSION, 2-WHEEL DRIVE, 4-WHEEL DRIVE, ALL-WHEEL DRIVE, etc.
With that said, it also deserves mention that there is a Technical Service Bulletin published by Ford Motor Company that applies to the model year and model that you have listed that involves Diagnostic Test Code (DTC) P0456.

Please note that this bulletin emphasizes the requirement of special equipment to properly diagnose and repair the DTC's listed in the bulletin. Below is a brief (partial) description of the bulletin:

ISSUE
Some vehicles may exhibit a Malfunction Indicator Lamp (MIL) illuminated with Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTCs) P0442, P0455, P0456, P0457 or P1442 or a "Check Fuel Cap" Lamp illuminated with DTC P0457 for the Evaporative Emission System. This may be caused by loose or leaking hoses, loose or broken fuel cap, a leak at the top of the fuel filler pipe neck, etc.
ACTION
Use the Rotunda Leak Detector Smoke Machine (Part 218-00001) or equivalent, to locate and repair leaks in the Evaporative Emission System.

A new knock sensor was installed, new air filter, new hose-old was leaking antifreeze. The engine light went off but came back on 30 to 40 minutes later. The computer was reset on two different...

Ok.. the p0328 is in fact a bad knock sensor. I would suggest that someone replaced it incorrectly or the wrong one.. maybe even the wrong part.

p0442 is a small leak in some part of the evap system. Faulty gas cap can cause this but if it was not there before I would suggest the shop knocked something loose or cracked a hose during their repair.

p0456 is a large leak in the same evap system. Likely related to the p0442.

Good luck.

Check engine light on codes p0442 p0456 p0513

P0442 and P0456 are both evaporative emission error codes due to a small leak. The most common cause is a leaking gas cap or hose leak on that system. I did not list a code for your 0513. I am sending you a little information about your problem.. Best of Luck to you..

2003 Lexus RX300 3.0L 2003 Toyota Sienna 3.0L 2003 Toyota Highlander 3.0L, Eng Cfg V6, Eng Des 1MZFE, USA/Canada 2004 Toyota Avalon XL 3.0L
Check engine light is on with trouble codes P0442 and P0456. The codes are evaporative system small leak codes.
1. Verify that the gas cap is a factory Toyota gas cap and visually inspect that all hoses and lines are tight and connected.

2. Locate the canister closed solenoid and the vacuum switching valve on the canister. Manually ground them and verify that they operate and function. The canister closed solenoid is normally open and should close when grounded. The vacuum switching valve on the canister is normally closed and needs to open when grounded.

3. Verify that the hoses are not loose or pulled off the canister closed valve on the air cleaner housing. This has been a common problem on some models.

4. If no problem is found, the next step is to ground the canister closed solenoid and the vacuum switching valve under the vehicle and simulate an evaporative test and verify that the system holds a vacuum and functions normally. When the solenoids are grounded, back probe the Blue/Black (L/B) wire on the pressure sensor, and with no vacuum or pressure, the voltage should read around 3.3 volts. Start up the vehicle and turn on the purge vacuum switching valve and use engine vacuum to draw down the system to around 2 volts on the pressure sensor. If the voltage does not increase rapidly, there is no problem. If the voltage increases quickly, look for the leak in the evaporative system. Potential Causes: Canister Closed Valve
Disconnected Canister Closed Valve (CCV) Hose
Gas Cap
Harness
Vacuum Switching Valve - For the pressure sensor.

CODES,P0442,P0455,P0456,P1684

P0442, P0455 AND P0456 are all evaporative leak monitor test failures (small, medium and large leaks). These codes appear anytime the integrity of the air space above the fuel or the lines to/from the vapor canister or purge valve. If there is no damage to the canister, check the lines that run under the van from the fuel tank and canister to the purge valve (under the hood). Also, check to make sure that the hoses are not split or disconnected where they connect to the purge valve. The P1684 is abit more confusing. This is not a valid DTC for your vehicle. It's possible the scanner the shop you went to is an OTC scanner that is reporting a false code. It's also possible they wrote it down incorrectly. The closest thing that makes any sense is a P1486 which would indicate a pinched hose in the same monitor system as the other 3 codes. Best of luck!
