2000 Ford Windstar LX, 80000 miles on it just bought it from a private party running great until today.. Won't go into any gear but reverse. Is this car known for transmission problems?

Seeing as how no one ever changes trans fluid and all vehicles tend to have some trans issues,I would say your best bet is to check with a trans shop and if your comfortable there, have it towed. Unless it is something simple, expect about a $2000.00 repair bill.

Unfortunately, it's only worth what someone's willing to pay. $1000 doesn't sound like a scammy offer on a 10 year vehicle that at least has one problem known with it, and possibly a relatively major engine problem. Private party Bluebook value on a fair condition 1999 base Windstar with 100k miles is only $1350 (3/2009).
