Question about 1997 Lincoln Town Car

Error code 171 and 174 on a 1997 lincoln town car

Says system is too lean. We smell gas inside the car after driving for a while. Was told it could be a vapor canister or o rings. That has been going on for 2 weeks. The error codes started yesterday.

SOURCE: 2000 Lincoln Town Car (Engine Service) found a EVAP System?

Check your gas cap. If someplace can test it you might luck out. This website advertises manuals and info online. The evaporator cannister is suppose to purify excess fuel vapors. But a system which is not sealed will code an error lamp.

SOURCE: Coolant vapors coming through vents

Sounds to me like a leaking heater core, probably just started. Quite an extensive operation to replace. If you happen to be in a cold climate, the windows will undoubtedly fog up. Hope this helps

SOURCE: 1997 lincoln town car 4.6 with a p0430 fault code

I will make an assumption here, we know what the root word means. This code was extracted from the computer by? What this is telling you one of 2 things: The Bank 2 oxygen sensor down stream of the catalytic converter (there are 2 converters, one for each bank of cylinders on the 4.6ltr engine) is bad and/or that the Bank 2 catalytic converter is no longer doing the job it was designed to do. Simply, Catalysts wear out. They are good for approx 100,000 miles (as required by Federal Law). Again, I assume that the reason the intake manifold was replaced was because it had a crack in one, or more, of the runners? (part that feeds the head of a manifold). It may have taken a while to find this as being the cause of why the car running incorrectly, maybe rough. This means, that during the time the car was being driven with the problem, the amount of unburned, or not within spec exhaust gases, coming off the side of the engine affected by the intake issue was higher than normal. This out of balance level of exhaust gases were being dumped into the converter on that side of the engine, thus causing the converter to have to run hotter, work harder, or even at the time the gas was being processed through, causing deposits to be formed in the converter, thus shortening it's life span. The Bank 1 side of the engine, apparently, did not have the issue and it's catalytic converter's life was not affected. I hope this makes sense to you.

LINCOLN ERROR CODE 2197 02 sensor signal stuck lean bank 2, sensor 1

The gas smell should resolve itself when you get the O2 sensor changed or find the cause for the lean condition. What is happening with the gas smell is the system is trying to add gas to solve the lean condition

There are many ways to look at this. Since 1 cylinder has not been blamed for the problem, the O2 sensor averages the exhaust to determine rich and lean mixtures. If extra air is seeping into the exhaust either after the combustion(exhaust manifold) or before combustion(Intake manifold) the resulting exhaust will contain more air in the mix and be classified as "Lean".

Your engine may have different features depending on the Year, Model, and engine size, v-6 or v-8. There are air venting devices in the Intake Manifold that may be the cause of the problems too.

These parts are the ISC solenoid and the Manifold Runners. Modern Intake manifolds have 2 chambers with the runners changing the chambers. If the runners are dirty, they can stick. One chamber can provide more air than the other and it will cause an imbalance, misfire, and incorrect fuelmix.

There are operating PODs which can work by Vacuum or Electric and they can become inoperative or unattached and fail to move the Manifold runner. These smaller parts are less expensive than the runners and could be all you need. Sometimes the plastic clips attaching the PODs to the runners breaks.

The people who see the most Lincolns to work on are usually Lincoln or Ford dealers. This does not mean a Private garage can not do a competent repair for a lower price. Sometimes Ford parts are cheaper and interchangeable with Lincoln.

It may be worth it to just change the O2 sensor to see if it is accurate or not. Then if the problem goes away, you have saved a big repair bill.

What does it means when i press the accelarator i smell gas and my car is a 1985 lincoln town car?

If you are smelling gas then one of two things is wrong. You either have a fuel leak or the engine is running with an overly rich fuel/air mixture.
