Question about 1999 Jeep Cherokee

1 Answer

What should my battery gauge read on my 1999 jeep Cherokee 4.0L? It says 14 right now, but It sometimes doesnt turn over right away, but after I get it started its fine. I'm thinking weak battery. Should it read 18? Also if I leave the door open for a really short time like maybe 4 or 5 minutes when i go to start it same problem, i get this clicking noise like the battery is just not strong enough, and the radio come on as if the battery was disconnected. What could be causing this?

sounds like a regulator malfunction to me..need to connect a battery/alternator tester to the system and see if the regulator is bad.. this will cause full charge of the alternator to enter the system.. this uses the battery as a regulator and will cause overheating of wires and relays..if the alternator can be removed and tested separately(most can), do this and see if this is the case..replace if bad..good luck..

My jeep grand Cherokee will shut off and all the gauge on dashboard turn on

It could be the O2 sensor and the camshaft sensor. I have the same Jeep and having the same issues. Auto Parts stores have the sensor, just need to find a good mechanic that wont over charge you. When you do, ask then to run the codes to make sure.

Sounds like the starter is going out. Autozone will check those for free. It's just 2 bolts mounting the thing. It's under the passenger side rear of the engine. Undo battery, those 2 bolts and keep track of which wires go where. Run down to Autozone for a check or a new starter.
