Check the transmission fluid, check the level .If the fluid is very dirty then drain the fluid will be fine to make sure no dirt inside that may disturb the transmission work or make pressure while shifting. Transmission Slipping Signs

  • A delay of more than a second in shifting from the neutral to drive or reverse gear, could mean that there is a problem with the transmission. If on changing from a neutral or park position to the drive or reverse gear, the car does not immediately catch the gear and move forward or backward, then it could mean a problem in the transmission.
  • If you change gears, and you hear a sudden clunk or sudden jolt or shudder, then the shifting is not smooth and there could be a problem with the gearbox.
  • If the engine rpm keeps increasing but there is no increase in the speed, then it could be a sign of the transmission slipping.
  • Another one of the transmission slipping signs is oil or automatic transmission fluid (ATF) leakage. This could damage the transmission.
  • If your car has suddenly started sounding noisy, then it could also be because of a problem in the gearbox.
  • Most automatic transmission systems, nowadays, have a check engine light or an OD light, which flashes if there is a problem with the engine. You will need a code reader to diagnose the problem by reading the code.
its advisable to get car scanned at diagnosis center to get error codes, At diagnosis center you will receive the error code.As per the error code it will detect the exact faulty part in the car due to which the problem is occurring. For more help :--- at its absolutely free to get car scanned. Transmission Slipping When Cold
If your transmission slips only when its cold, then there could be three possible reasons. The first possible reason of the transmission slipping when cold is that, your engine is low on transmission fluid and could use some more. The reason it works fine, once it's warmed up is because the oil expands with heat. The second reason could be that the fluid has become old and denatured, and needs to be changed. Remember to use only the genuine transmission fluid when you replace it. The third reason could be that the oil has become dirty or contaminated, and needs to be changed. If it's dirty, then you could also check your filter and change it if needed. You could go for a transmission flush.
Transmission Slipping When Hot
Sometimes the transmission may work fine when cold, but you might notice the transmission slipping when hot. This means, that after you have been driving for sometime the gears may not change smoothly. A transmission that slips when hot, could mean that the transmission fluid may be less or could have worn down and needs to be changed. Also check your filter and see if it needs to be replaced. There could also be a problem with the wiring and ignition.
Transmission Slipping Out of Gear
If your car transmission is slipping out of gear, and you have checked the fluid levels and filters, and they all seem fine, then your gearbox might need replacing or extensive repair might be needed.
In some cases it has noticed that if car is not serviced for few months then this is the one cause of transmission slipping. Thanks. keep updated for any more can rate this solution and show your appreciation

Transmission over drive is causing the transmission to slip. When I take off the overdrive the transmission functions normally but it uses much more gas.

Roger, that doesn't even make a whole lot of sense to me. If the overdrive is causing the transmission to slip, wouldn't it also cause the fuel mileage to go down? Are you sure the transmission is slipping? Or is the transmission simply shifting in and out of overdrive? If it is, is it shifting at the proper speeds? Driving at around 40 - 50 Mph will sometimes make the transmission go in and out of overdrive repeatedly. This can be perfectly normal.

Have you checked your transmission fluid level?

Is your overdrive off light flashing? If the transmission is actually slipping the OD OFF light should be blinking at you to let you know there is a transmission problem. Either that, or the Check Engine light will be coming on. In either of these cases, you need to scan your onboard computer network for possible fault codes.

OVERDRIVE is fine in most driving. if you tow a trailler or pulling long hills take out of overdrive. otherwise the vehicle will handle when to shift.
