I Have water in my front passenger side cylinder on my 1998 Ford Expedition. Is the head gasket blown or can it be something else/

Could also be intake gasket, the only way to know is to tear down the intake , also have it checked for warpage

Blown head gaskets can be very difficult to see. If the vehicle is fitted with cylinder liners in an aluminium block, then also check liner security and for any potential cracks. Also check the cylinder head for cracks and to check if it has warped. You will need a straight edge for that and perhaps a thin sheet of paper or some feeler gauges.

Where are the freeze plugs located on a 1998 Ford Expedition with a 5.4L ?


There are plugs on both the driver's and passenger's side of the engine block and both cylinder heads [outboard side of each head]. There are also several plugs located in the rear of the block. The transmission must be removed to access these rear plugs. You should have changed your antifreeze more often!

Have heads checked for cracks
and pressure tested
On a 12 year old head,I would do
the valves etc

I have a 98 Ford Expedition, shut off on its own while driving down highway after check engine light started blinking, started back up right after. Got home, Coolant smells like gasoline. What could be the...


Perhaps a blown head gasket. It takes a fairly good misfire for Fords computer to actually flash a code. A blinking check engine light indicates a cylinder or multiple cylinder misfire. The fact that you smell gasoline in the coolant AND your check engine light is flashing leans toward a blown head gasket. I'll explain: When a head gasket blows between a cylinder and a coolant jacket (port coolant runs through to keep engine cool) that coolant can now enter into the cylinder chamber and the fuel and exhaust can also enter into the coolant system.Your coolant system can be pressurized up to 16psi under normal driving conditions so there is quite a force there and if there is a place for that coolant to go, it will find it. When coolant enters into the cylinder it creates a misfire. (water mixed with fuel and air does not make a very good ignition source) So then on the exhaust stroke, it can then expel this fuel/water mix back into the coolant system by way of that blown gasket, during an exhaust stroke the pressure is well beyond the 16lbs of your coolant system and can then force its way back in. This would explain a flashing light and the smell of fuel in the coolant. But for it to die while driving down the road....it would have to be misfiring on more than just 1 cylinder or there is a separate issue on that one all together. With a head gasket blown between the coolant port and the cylinder, you may not see a visible leak from the outside. In this situation one would look at the coolant for signs of floating oil or carbon, pull the oil dipstick and look to see if it is a milky brown color, bubbles also indicates water and/or use a chemical test. You can't pick that up at walmart though. But this chemical test would be a blue chemical placed into a clear cylinder or tube with a suction ball at one end. You remove the radiator cap, start the vehicle then place this tube over the spot where the cap was. Must not let it make contact with the coolant though. Squeeze the ball several times, this draws in air and/or vapors. IF the blue chemical begins to turn yellow it has detected exhaust gases in your coolant system confirming a blown head gasket. Sorry so lengthy...hope it helps.

It sounds like you have a blown head gasket or cracked cylinder head. These are usually caused from the engine over heating. if the leak is that server a quick check would be to fill the radiator with water and leave the cap off, then crank the engine over if the water comes squirting out from the radiator its a good to say its in the head gasket or cylinder head. Hello morris_valen: My name is Roger and I can help. The fire order is 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Number 8 cylinder is the rear plug on the drivers side. The cylinders run front to back on the passenger side as 1-2-3-4- and on the opposite side front to back 5-6-7-8.

Firing order 1-4-2-5-3-6
cylinder # passenger side front to back 1-2-3
Cylinder # driver side front to back 4-5-6

Coil pack # passenger to drivers side firewall 1-2-3
coil pack #passenger to drivers side radiator 5-6-4

When the coolant hose broke,did the engine overheat?If so,it seems through your description that the head gasket has blown.The most common cause of water/coolant in the cylinder is a blown head gasket.It will need to be replaced.Take the vehicle to your mechanic and explain to them what happened .This helps them to fix the problem, knowing what may need to be done and what to look for.Hope this helps.
