Question about 2000 Mercury Grand Marquis

1 Answer

I have an engine miss,****,buck at about 45 mph when accelerating lightly. It runs fine if it down shifts to third gear. The car has 116k miles on it. I don't get any codes. Had it to the transmission shop, hooked up a scanner and took it for a ride - no tranny problem, it is an engine miss. So far I have installed new spark plugs (badly worn),new fuel filter (it was clogged) new air filter, cleaned throttle body and MAF sensor, checked fuel pressure at fuel rail (normal). What next???

There are no plug wires. It has a coil on each plug. I did put 2 bottles of Chevron Pro-Gard fuel injector cleaner in the tank a few hundred miles ago. Is Seafoam better? Thanks for the reply.

Change plug wires next and put in some SeaFoam. This sounds like a tune up issue... just run though the paces.

What makes my 2002 Merc Sable have three little short pauses like misses when it shifts from 1st to 2nd gear.

Sounds like a coil breaking down. Try this for a test, get going to around 45 mph and lightly accelerate, is the is miss is reproduced then the most likely cause is the secondary ignition system. I.E plugs or wires or a coil.

2009 Chev Aveo - Two weeks ago driving to work , when I would accelerate, every now and then it would miss - then be fine. Drove 25 miles at 60 - 65 mph. All of a sudden it missed, the engine light came on...

Ignition misfire, how where the sparkplug boots, they have a tendency to leak toward ground, the coil fail easy and you may need to replace that as well

First suggestion is go to AutoZone and get the error codes read (for free) -- this'll probably tell you exactly what the problem is.

MY TRANS WONT SHIFT INTO THIRD GEAR UNTIL IM DOING 45 MPH IT SHIFTS FINE IN FIRST AND SECOND GEAR WHEN IT IS IN SECOND GEAR AND WONT SHIFT TO THIRD I CAN PUT IT IN N AND BACK TO OVERDRIVE THEN IT SHIFTS.

Most likely your shift cable (from the selector to the transmission) is worn, maybe needs lubrication. Mine had a similiar problem, but had to shift it into neutral and back up to get it in reverse. A new shift cable solved the problem.

Computer firmware needs upgrade

Take your car to a Chrysler dealer shop and have them update the transmission program. As your tranny wears it loses it shift point and stutters between 40 - 45 mph looking for the right gear to change to..Had same problem in 94 Concorde and 94 T&C minivan.Reprogramming tranny fixed both cars.
