Question about Ford F-150

1 Answer

91 F-150, 300 inline 6, Fuel injection. I have a problem with my fuel system. When I turn the ignition to the on position, the fuel pump will not shut off. I replaced the fuel pump relay and the eec relay and problem not resolved. The only choice I have left is the powertrain control module but I would like to know if I may be missing a chance of another fault before replacing the most exspensive part involved.

Looking at the wiring diagram - the controls for the pump are...
Fuel Pump relay (already changed)
EEC Power relay (already changed)
EECM

There IS a slight chance of the can-purge purge solenoid being failed - and keeping voltage to the pump.

Remove Wire 31 (cut temporarily) on the EECM to verify this is NOT the case. (the wire is GRY/Yellow)

If the pump stays running still - the EECM is the culprit.

Thanks!!

Fuel injected, right? I'm not aware of any inline pump that can output 50psi.

Most fuel injection systems use a ignition bypass circuit to energize the fuel pump when starting the engine. However, when the engine starts and the ignition key is returned to the "On" position, a Fuel Pump Relay keeps the fuel pump working. The relay may be defective.

5.8 ford f150 87 old high press.pump was 45psi new one is 95psi will that matter

Very much so. The pressure regulator is designed to handle the OEM pressure.
But, I'm confused with your story.
A 1987 F150 with a 5.8 engine should have a carb, not fuel injection.
The 6 cyl and 5.0 engines do use fuel injection.
And, I only show inline fuel pumps for the fuel injected models in O'Reilly's book having 70-95psi. Nothing listed that would have 45psi.
Are you sure about your numbers ?

No spark

Well to begin with the fuel does not "go to the fuel pump". The fuel pump is in the fuel tank and sends fuel to the injectors.

Fuel pressure must be checked with a gauge at the fuel test port on the fuel rail to determine if there is sufficient fuel pressure. The fuel test port location depends on if your Tempo is equipped with TBI injection or PFI injection (both were available for the 1990 model year) Both systems were equipped with a fuel pump test connector in the engine bay.

Then for the spark thing, there are also two different ignition control systems for that model year...Duraspark Ignition and TFI ignition. How to go about troubleshooting these two systems is totally different.

Replaced injector pump and fuel filter still starts hard

system may be bleeding down thru leaky injectors. Try turning ignition on and off several times before cranking. This will help the pump pressurize the system. If this works, you know your system is bleeding down. Let me know if you have questions.

Engine not getting fuel

First, confirm that the fuel filter is clean. Next determine that the electric fuel pump (usually located in the fuel tank) is operating. You can do this when you check your fuel filter. With the filter out, turn on the ignition (DO NOT CRANK THE ENGINE). The fuel pump should run and fuel should flow out of the fuel filter holder .... or the fuel line if it is an inline filter. Be extremely careful and have somebody help with this test because you could be pumping raw gasoline into the engine compartment and on the ground. If the filter is clean and you are getting fuel out of the fuel line then the problem could be an engine computer or the fuel injection system.
