Regardless of engine orientation, the starter will always be at the junction of the transmission bell-housing and the engine block.
It drives the flywheel (it has a ring gear) that is located at the output end of the crankshaft and is normally bolted to the bell-housing.
If you plan on DIY repairs, I recommend buying an aftermarket service manual. I like Haynes best and these are available on line, eBay, or at auto parts chain stores:
