Question about 1997 GMC Sierra
First rmove the gas cap and listen while someone turns the key on and you should be able to hear the pump run , if it doesn't make any sound
try banging the bottom of the tank while someone rolls the motor over , if the pump is on it's way out this will usually give you enough time to make it where you can fix it.

Well of the two the fuel filter is the easist, its below the driver seat on the inside of the frame. However, it is more likely the fuel pump. you'll have to drop the fuel tank which if you have someone to help is not too bad. If you don't you can have it done for about $400.00.
