Starter wires on a 1997 sunfire

Sunfire keys are not chipped therefore there is no learning process that needs to be done. The 3 10 thing is a waste of time. The ONLY theft deterrent in this car is the starter cutout through the passlock sensor circuit. It may also cut out the fuel pump, I can't remember. Also you were probably damaging your starter by holding the ignition to start giving it power too long and overheating and damaging the starter internally. To learn a new key to a cars computer with a "chipped" key (not the Sunfire) you just turn the ignition to "on" then "off" not hold it in start for the recommend amount of time.

I would check the Maxi-Fuses, you may have blown the main fuse.

98 sunfire wont start, battery good, replaced starter solnoid, starter, ignition.. please help

if you had the starter recall done, there is a relay mounted near the center of the radiator that controls start power. Pontiac dealer sells the part.

Wiring issue

It wouldn't be a common problem but it is possible to have the winding of the starter solenoid fail.  It's also possible that the ignition switch doesn't supply voltage directly to the starter solenoid but to a relay that assumes the task since the solenoid can draw a couple of amps and depending on the contacts of an ignition switch to handle that much current isn't a good idea. I have not personally seen the solenoid on a fused circuit but that too is possible.
